New diaries
As previously mentioned we've been working on a better solution to cut down on the creation of spam diaries and we're glad to announce this is now in place. Our spam detection system shows we're still blocking around 5 creation attempts every minute, but lots more were still getting through. So from today all new diaries will be required to confirm their email address before they are created.

Creating a diary won't ask for any additional information, but it will send a verification email as part of the process. This email will contain a special link which will need to be clicked to create the diary. If the link is not clicked within 24 hours all temporary information will be removed from the database and you will need to start again.

Existing diaries
For the moment we are only concerned with new diaries and these will be monitored for the next few weeks to make sure that there aren't any additional problems. While we want to make creating a diary as much trouble as possible for spammers, we don't want to make it so hard that real people are unable to sign up.

After we're happy everything is working as expected, we'll be modifying it for existing diaries so changes to the email address will also need to be verified before they are saved. Many of the password retrieval problems are due to mistyped email addresses so we want to make sure the information on your diary is correct as the email address is our primary way of confirming diary ownership.

We will not be forcing any sort of verification on the existing email addresses already in the database.

If you want to check/change your existing email address now, you can click here or go to "Diary Maintenance" and "E-Mail Address".

While I think its a good idea for new diaries, if you've had a diary for 10 years (as I do tomorrow!), you shouldn't have to jump through hoops to post! [Jasmine Michelle]

I've had the same email for both my diarys in here and yes I have two.. I can understand the need to remind 'existing members' to make sure they have their most used addy in here but not sure how that could be done without ppl feeling they have to jump hoops to keep their diaries..

I've not been here 10yrs but I have been here quite awhile at least 5yrs so I wonder how your going to do this [Ladyhawk]

I've had to confirm things with my email address first, to do several things online through the years. It was no big deal. No one should have any problems setting up a diary this way. Thanks for all you do...:) [CheshireCat]

When you need to have existing diaries confirm their email addresses, we stand ready to do so. That may eliminate or suspend some diaries whose owners have died. There is always that possibility. [Spoo]
