The Optimist
She plucked the ring from the sun,
looked to the sky, and laughed like
a candy heart --
placed the ring daintily above her
hair and kicked off her shoes.
"Dance with me!" she cried.
I don't want to tell her
it's gonna rain.
With the first roll of thunder
I handed her my jacket --
but with the warm onslaught
she tossed it aside --
as the sunlight waned and
the halo died,
"Dance with me!" she cried.
She opened her lips
for the rain to come in,
it rolled down her forehead, and
then down her chin,
and gathered in a drop
that could never fall.
She didn't need the sun, it seems --
She hangs her hat on dreams.
