IWD and renovations Monday, March 08, 2010

For those of you who don't know, today is International Women's Day, which is obviously a day honoring women and all their achievements. The wiki article explains it much better than I can and is pretty interesting in itself. Leo called already and wish me happy Women's Day. He's going to try to find peanut butter for me and we'll be eating a horribly unhealthy dinner together tonight (not related to the peanut butter though! ) in honor of me. LOL

The renovations aren't going as smoothly as we had hoped. (Do they ever?)

Friday afternoon we started putting up the wallpaper.. and it was not going well. We were both getting on each other's nerves, we didn't know the best way of going about hanging up the paper, and we ended up having to throw away an entire roll because of mistakes. Before giving up for the night, we took down half of what we had done because it looked so shitty and decided to start over the next day.

Saturday we found our groove. I measured, cut and applied glue while Leo hung the paper. I figured out how to get the prep steps done in the same amount of time it took him to hang so that we were able to finish 3/4 of the area that day.

Sunday, after both catching up on sleep, we brunched together, went and bought more supplies, grabbed a late lunch at Hesburger and then came home to continue with wallpapering. We had to take a break for one of his German students (who's taking a language proficiency test on the 13th [He has to pass to be able to move to Germany with his wife - who was previously Leo's student and has already passed the test] and therefore can't afford to miss a single lesson), but after that and dinner, we continued wallpapering until finished. I attempted to sand the door frames while Leo was teaching, but if any of you has ever sanded anything, you'll know that it's a complete bitch. After an hour, I gave up. My muscles were (and still are) sore, I was tired and hot and had lost my motivation. After complaining about it to Leo (I would be the one to do all the sanding since he has to work all week), he decided we'd buy some acetone-based paint-remover thing and see how well that goes.

Until then, though, I need to make sure the edges of all the wallpaper are actually glued down and cover/tape the trim and sockets. Then maybe I'll be able to start painting the walls (finishing painting the walls tomorrow would be great!). And hopefully this coming weekend, we'll be able to paint the doors and frames and replace the flooring.

Time to go do some of those things now, I suppose.

Why remove the paint? If you sand the edges of any chips lightly, you should be able to prime the spots and then paint over the existing paint. [auburn_girl] 3/8/2010 9:14:52 AM
RYN: I don't know why I picked that title. Sometimes I can't decide on what to choose given the fact that my entries cover a bunch of different things, so I put whatever comes into my head first. LOL

If you're willing to prime it will cover all the stains and give a great finish to the final product. If you strip down the bare wood you're going to have to prime them anyway, so why not try doing one without stripping it to see if it works? It could save you a LOT of time and energy. :) [auburn_girl]

RYN: I love 'em. Only way to wear them though is if they are the focus of the outfit ... ie. a black dress or skirt and simple top. Otherwise it gets crazy-looking. Thanks for the compliment ~ when I go back and look at the picture after reading all the comments I start to see it in a different light. :) [auburn_girl] 3/12/2010 10:44:21 AM
