Okay, I think I am a person who generally gets along well with new technology.  Sure, we've had our differences - but in the end we usually get along (and I usually win).  However.  Somebody please tell me where I can find the team of people who are working to "advance" the technology that is used for speech recognition at customer service call centers.  Have you seen "Constantine" (we'll discuss the wonders of Keanu Reeves acting some other time)?  You know the demon spawn that crawl around on all fours, are missing the tops of their heads, and spend their time trying to trap souls and drag them into the Abyss?  There's a team of those guys, sitting in some room somewhere, writing the code for this "improved" technology.

Personally, I liked the "old" technology, where we had to push buttons to respond to prompts in customer service systems.  I can press "2" a lot quicker than I can say "Accounts Receivable".  What really drives me crazy is the recorded voices that try to explain in oh so calm and patient tones how to use the system.  And God forbid you say something the system doesn't understand.  Then the phantom voices start with the apologies - "Sorry, I didn't get that." (maybe because you're a MACHINE, no matter what you want me to think).  And then as a final insult it throws you back to the beginning of the "I'll tell you all the wonderful options you have" loop.  Argh.

Good morning, and Happy March,

Just a quick one to let you know we were having some temporary issues on one of our database servers this morning.  Our monitors showed that site performance was spiraling downward at a steady pace.  I identified what was causing the performance bottleneck, and we were forced to take the site offline for about fifteen minutes to straighten it out.

Everything is back to normal now, and there was no corruption or loss of data.  I'll continue to monitor performance through the day, to make sure that I did solve the problem.

On another note, I fixed a problem last night that was causing favorites of some people to show up in the new(er) diary layout, after they changed their favorites from Public to Private.  This bug has been squashed, so if you were one of the people who reported this it should be fine now.

On another another note, there are still some people reporting login problems.  Not nearly as many as before, but I am still working on tracking down what is causing this.  It seems to be a combination (or conflict really) between our security code and some of the advertising network code we are running.  Of course, if I could just switch off the ads it would solve the problem - but we wouldn't be around for long then.

P.S. It appears the performance problem is NOT solved - some pages are still taking a long time to load.  I am still working on this.

Thanks,

The DiaryMaster
