Getting gas, 2012.
Slowly we begin feeling better. Only today have we admitted we might live after all. This is great progress. We aren’t quite to the leaping out of bed stage in the mornings, but he’s back at work and I am considering going over and looking at the books.
Saturday we felt well enough to get gas in Grumpy. Never will we see gas in the buck a gallon range again, nor will we see gas in the two dollar range. We have passed the upper three’s today and gas is now over four dollar a gallon. Five bucks isn’t far away. If G’s car didn’t get such good mileage, he couldn’t keep his job. Grumpy now get’s 17 mpg, and so he gets driven little. We got both gas and foods at Costco, and it was a first to spend more on gas than in the store itself.
We were off to our Sunday night Speakers Meeting business meeting last night too. I intended to add to the chaos of the meeting…and business meetings are always chaotic. One month ago, it was decided that the meeting would only pay cooks ten bucks a cake. Determined to prove that it took more than ten bucks to make a large sheet cake, I had priced cake making at three different stores from both box and scratch. The Great Geezer did the math for me.
Yes, I discovered, it did cost vastly less to make cake from scratch…and average of $3.50 per large sheet cake sans frosting. The frosting is the biggest cost whether homemade or from a can. A large sheet cake made from boxes averages $17.00 with two cans of frosting. But I also discovered that our newest cake bakers are taking home almost a whole sheet cake every week. No one is eating their homemade cakes…which are thin and skimpy things with little frosting. They are doing it their way.
Not doing things my way, I’ll take care of myself today.

That's interesting about the cost of cake. I guess "Let them eat cake." wasn't such a good idea after all. [Tornado]

I can't remember the last time I made any kind of cake. Maybe the meetings should think of another type of snack? Very good you are recovering. I do hope the price of gas will encourage us to develop alternate sources of energy. But I imagine it will, instead, encourage us to drill and pipe and otherwise ruin our environment. [BonnieRose]

That is amazing about the price of cake. Hey, Sweetie -- if you vote for Newt, (:D I'm not saying I am going to..), he promises gas at $2 a gallon! :-D [Beesknees]

We haven't hit $4/gallon here yet....but they say we will by summer. As it is, I think I paid $3.63/gal last weekend...so it's not far off.
And don't even get me started on the price of groceries! Sheesh! [GypsyWynd]

it seems cakes are bigger and richer over there than here....with more frosting too. But it is true and I have proven it, that in most cases it is more economical to make a cake from scratch, and we can be assured the ingredients are fresher too.
Glad you are slowly getting well. hugs p [Gypsy Spirit]

I'm so glad you are both going to live. May the days when you again joyfully leap out of bed in the mornings soon arrive!
I agree with you about the price of gas/petrol. Many say we have now reached peak oil, so as the supply available in the ground and its quality both drop, of course the price will go up - and up - and up.
Here I'm paying around 145 cents Aust per litre for petrol, which, if my conversion is correct, is around $5.13 US per gallon. I think prices in the UK and Europe are quite a bit higher, but I haven't checked recently.
How, I wonder, is Newt G planning to bring US prices down to $2 per gallon? [Arbi]

I was watching an old movie this weekend, and in one scene this guy was getting gas. After getting a full tank of gas, the attendant said "That will be $4.89." LOL! [Sobernt]

I think that cooking from scratch is pretty much always cheaper and healthier. We have been so spoiled by cheap gas prices we regard cheap gas as a birthright. Big oil and the auto companies bought up the light rail systems and closed them up in the 1930's & 1940's so there is no real mass transit left in this country. [brickpaver]

You pay more or less R8.13 per liter in South African rand value.
South African price in the coastal areas (where we live) is R10.82 per liter, which is about $30.72 per gallon(There's 3.78 liters in a gallon/ $4.01 per gallon in South Africa)
Our prices is expected to go up again soon. It's gone up considerably the past three years.
Dollar/Rand Exchange rate today:$1.00 equals R6.55.
I'm so happy to see that you are feeling somewhat better. Oy! It's good news! [the_mysticalmuse]

We're still at $3.35 or something, but then I haven't stopped at the gas station for a few days! Terrible turn of events. My heart goes out to our rural folks, most of whom have a long commute to work. [TickTockTickTock]

Am I laughing or crying over all the 'news' about the price of gasoline--ours has been over $4 a gallon for at least 2 years, and as high as, oh never mind... doesn't matter really, if we could do with less, we would! Glad to know you are both feeling human again. Leaping out of bed full of energy is overrated anyway [seedys]

Not sure I understand about the cake - attendees at the meeting take cakes along and are paid to supply cakes which then sometimes go home with them again? Hmm, I agree about the "from scratch" is cheaper bit, but I think there is a bigger issue here ... but I may be misunderstaning the process? Arbi has(thank goodness) explained the petrol prices - I always laugh when USA folk complain. I think our prices are too low, except when I'm on holidays and want to travel, of course :-) [balansert]
