Harmit Bhangu 3/11/2009

Here's yet another theist who probably should have told his gOd to shut up:

----- Man Says God Told Him To Kill Truck Driver (KPAX.com; Jan 13)

A Canadian man who stabbed a Ronan truck driver at a Minnesota rest stop says God ordered him to kill the driver.

Harmit Bhangu appeared in a Fargo North Dakota court Tuesday morning on charges of second degree attempted murder.

The victim, Dale Morigeau, 51, of Ronan was stabbed 4 to 5 times in the abdomen Sunday. The attack happened at the Interstate 94 rest area in Moorhead.

Police say the assault was still happening when they arrived. They shouted at the suspect to stop, but had to use a taser to subdue him.

Police say they were able to get to the scene quickly thanks to witnesses who called in right away.

Bhangu's bail is set at $1 million. He was also placed on medication to keep him from being violent in jail.

----- Mental Exam Next Step In Rest-Stop Stabbing Case (Dave Olson/Inforum.com; March 10)

Clay County authorities Monday dismissed a civil action seeking to have Harmit Bhangu committed indefinitely, but the man charged with attempted murder may still face commitment for mental issues, a prosecutor said.

The civil action against Bhangu had to be dismissed because a statutory deadline for completing the necessary mental evaluation was nearing, Assistant Clay Count Attorney Jenny Samarzja told Clay County District Court Judge Galen Vaa during a hearing Monday.

Samarzja said a doctor who was handling the case had been unable to find the necessary interpreter to talk to Bhangu, who faces charges of second-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon for a Jan. 11 incident at the Interstate 94 rest stop outside Moorhead.

Bhangu is accused of stabbing a truck driver eight to 10 times. Bhangu told police God told him to do it, according to court documents.

The victim, Dale Morigeau, of Montana, survived the attack.

Clay County Attorney Brian Melton said Bhangu is being held in a state security hospital in St. Peter, Minn., pending the outcome of a mental evaluation ordered as part of the criminal case.

He said the evaluation is designed to determine whether Bhangu has the mental capacity to assist with his own defense and whether he was able to understand right and wrong at the time of the acts he is accused of committing.

Melton said it is possible the evaluation being done as part of the criminal case could lead to Bhangu being committed to a hospital like the one in St. Peter for an in indefinite amount of time.

Bhangu is from Canada, but Melton said he didnt know whether the 32-year-old, who is originally from India, is a Canadian citizen.

NOTE: I'm still waiting for theists to forthrightly step up and accept the challenge I issued after posting three similar stories on March 6.

Just in case you missed it, here's that challenge once again:

If YOU happen to be a theist - and especially if you happen to be a theist who thinks you're on gOd's good side - please tell your deity to stop telling people to do awful things at your earliest convenience, ok? Thanks!

And if you could tell all the other theists you know to NOT listen to gOd if he/she/they/it tells them to kill someone, I'd really appreciate it.

In fact, if you could convince even one priest or minister or rabbi or imam to stand up and give a sermon or speech about how morality requires people to disobey gOd when he orders them to kill or engage in other violence, that would be great!

Maybe - just maybe - it'll reach the ears of someone who really needs to hear it.

And maybe the failure to speak out increases the odds of more of these horrible stories happening in the future....

(If you're a theist who's with me on this, please leave a note saying so. If you're not with me, please explain why. Thanks!)

*snickers*

i am totally with you on that challenge. though i've never heard of anyone doing anything this retarded, or needless, in the name of my god/s thankfully. doesn't mean that i don't harp at other crazies when they wander by my path though.

*shakes head* such a waste. thanks for missing the point guys.

There aren't many believers in Zeus anymore, thankfully, or maybe there's be more lightning-related deaths.

All kidding aside, I have had someone stop and help me change a tire because "The Lord told me to" but I've never had anything THIS scary happen while on the road. Yikes!  [Kaly]

Harmit Bangyou is just such a great name.

I know Christians who are disturbed that Mullahs don't condemn Muslim violence against infidels and apostates and cartoonists. I think I'll spring your challenge against the next one I hear complaining about it.

The number of hard-core so-called Christians just itching to go kill some towel-heads probably peaked in 2003 while Bush and Fox were whipping the country into a blood frenzy.

Did you see the CNN online poll asking people to grade Obama's performance in his first 60 days? 22% flunked him. I am pretty sure those same 22% think Saddam financed 9/11 and Bush did a heckuva job. And a lot of them think God talked to Bush and invading Iraq was God's will. Which made it all right, all other evidence to the contrary. What's a little evidence among true believers?

I'll stop now.

See the cartoon at http://www.gocomics.com/stevesack/2009/03/11/

Nice image of religion being tossed away. Imagine that. Above us only sky.

All the theists stop reading your entries when you call them out, and then read again when they want to argue. I'm just guessing. [pamelot] 3/12/2009 8:09:57 AM

I think they stop responding when their programmed answers don't fit the questions, and when the pray for you thing isn't a real option. [bd]

Speaking for theists (though not necessarily grouping myself with them): One of my good friends is a aurally schizophrenic atheist. She hears voices, but doesn't attribute them to coming from any secondary source. Who gets the blame for the voices in her head? A disease -- a disorder. The same disease or disorder that should probably get the blame for Stabby here's voices. (contd) [greyscale] 3/13/2009 7:42:40 AM
Stabby may not be schizoid. He may, just like all of us, have an internal monologue. Some devout people attribute this to be the "still, small voice" of god, and some devout people don't. Either way, some people, based on what they talk themselves into, sometimes commit crimes and don't just pin them on god - there's a whole array of excuses out there. We're little excuse machines it seems.  [greyscale] 3/13/2009 7:53:28 AM
