I've just started on a new book - A Burnt Child by Stig Dagerman. About the book (From the book): A Burnt child concerns the complex emotional reactions of Atockholm family to the mother'ssudden death. The principal drama of the book is played out between the father, released from an insignificant, uncomprehending wife, and Bengt, the son, fiercely resolved to avenge his idolised mother on the living. Two woman complete the case - Bengt's timid fiancee of seventeen and his father's aging mistress, a cinema cashier. Stig Gagerman explores the complex tensions within this little group with compassion and with brilliant psychological insight. About Stig Dagerman (From the book): Stig Dagerman was regarded as the most talented young writer of the Swedish post-war generation. By the time he was twenty-six, he had published four novels, a collection of short stories, a book of travel sketches and four full-length plays - an astonishing output which was brought to a tragic end in 1954 when, at the age of thirty-one, Dagerman committed suicide, cutting short a career of brillant promise. I did a little search on him... http://www.littlebluelight.com/lblphp/intro.php?ikey=6 He seems to be a pretty deep person and the quotes from him are not too bad either. I came across this book in...(guess?) South Africa. Yeah, I bought 3 books. I am quite pleased with myself, seeing how I was in a rush and I paid for the book, having chosen it based on its title. It happened to be on sale. 49.95 Rand to 15 Rand. *shrugs...Cheap books are always a temptation. Let's just say I took a gamble and it didn't pay off too badly, judging by the first few pages...=)
