I ask the question almost rhetorically as the Manchester Police Force has just had 2 of its female constables murdered in a grenade and gun attack while responding to a call. The first time 2 female officers have been killed in one incident. The fact that they are females makes no difference. They were doing their job. A job that requires skill, courage, humour and steadfastness while protecting the population without fear or favour. British police do not wear sidearms routinely and have no wish to. They can be issued and they are used, it must be said not always appropriately, but the bobby on the beat doesn't want them nor does the public as a whole...and long may it remain so. Respect to all officers in all countries who carry out this job - especially those who police by public consent. In my town we had a man - he was no angel it must be said - who was murdered (at the best manslaughter) - while walking home along a tow path. Nothing has been found nor expressed as to why he was attacked by 2 teenagers on a popular walk from the town centre away from roads. In London a 14 year old was attacked and stabbed to death walking on a main road... What is up with the world? People are what make it happen. No person could nor should expect at some time to be attacked or worse. Is it really hard to get along with people even if we don't agree with them or their religion or their thoughts or their life-style? We are all on earth for a limited time surely it has got to be the way forward to share that life equally and fairly and get along. Is it time that we realised that acceptance of difference is what makes humans rise above the animal that they are (in biological terms humans are part of the animal kingdom). but it is the easy to say words that actually are hard to practice. The in-your-face aggressive approach that shouts 'look at me' or 'my way is the right way and nothing else can be right' breeds nothing but violence and discontent....fear and worry. All nations, all religions and all individuals have to look at themselves and consider their actions and the effect they will have on others and realise that the current aggressive inconsiderate intemperate approaches are not working. Life is there to be enjoyed and any taking of it leaves us a poorer place
