a little look at apathy 1/1/2005

from the blog of atypical singaporean:

"It is no secret that most Singaporean Students are an apathetic lot.

A cursory read through the NTU students blogring, demostrate a hilarously obliviousness to the biggest earthquake in recent history. Some posts bemoan the lack of sleep, while others write the most inane details of their lives, while some, i don't know, read and draw your own conclusions, defy rational explantion. It is as if, to them, the disaster never happened.

if (i hope not) this blogring is a microsm of what university students in Singapore are, I feel really sad."

a cursory read through my own collection of blog links, and none so far have mentioned the tsunami. not even myself. is it really apathy?

1) don't know what to say
2) too much media coverage already. nobody likes to be a parrot.
3) better to do something than to say something
4) really can't be bothered.

of course, hopefully it's the 3 on top. the world of cyberspace is by no means a accurate representation of real life. even if they don't blog about it, it doesn't mean they don't care or aren't doing anything in real life.

then we realise how much real life and virtual life has overlapped. some people even go to the extent of assuming your virtual life is similar to your real life. which is not true most of the time.

i still do hold some hope for singaporean students. we're a stressed bunch of people. people expect us to be too many things at the same time, sometimes. it simply isn't human.

Hi,I am the author of the blog you referenced.

Don't you feel absurd that for an event so catastrophic and so near home, no student has any opinion about it?

You say that it isn't human to expect stressed students to be everything all the time.

But I urge you to consider this, are you human anymore if you put blame stress and be apathetic over such a major disaster so close to home.

i was just trying to attribute it to something else perhaps? of course you could be correct. i for one am doing what i can and am organising fundraising drives with my friends. but i don't happen to write it down. i'm hoping i can say the same for others too.

Hi,

I wrote a post on my blog. Anyway, keep on writing.

I edited at my end of my post to reflect your response.

well i did write something about. i guess that even though many many pple died in this tsunami the problems that hit home the hardest are still personal ones. and perhaps that's why not so many pple blog about it. anyway i think most pple rather not bring bad news when there's already bad news all around.

btw blessed new year!

well...the tsunami's a really big event...but i can't really be bothered by it especially when i've got 2 big tests on my first 3 days in school...you're just so consumed by the studying that you dun even have time to think about stuff like that. nor do you have the energy. - david, the friend of violists  1/4/2005 5:59:53 AM
and i feel things like this occur like a tsunami. it suddenly swells and hits you out of norwhere.... after disbelief breaks down. [@|w@y5=bEhInD*U*] 1/10/2005 11:07:37 AM
