Proposition 8

By: Karasu Kyra

Yes, I do believe I shall have this piece of literature as my first impression.

--

I don't know if anyone will read this, but I feel the need to let my opinion be known. Proposal 8 was a proposal on the ballet to ban same-sex marriage.

I, as a lesbian, find this completely and utterly unacceptable. It angers me to the point I can't even think straight.

We live in America! We live in a country that boasts freedom. So why, why, why can't we have same-sex marriage?

Sexuality is not a choice. We don't wake up one day and say, "Hey. I think I'll be gay today!" NO! It doesn't work like that. Could you, as a straight person, choose to love another of the same sex? No! It's NOT a choice!

I've met many, far too many bigoted people out there. But I also know people who are completely accepting --and guess what? Most of them are straight! Wow! My best friend is one in particular. Now get this: She's straight and loves me for who I am!

Yeah, if it's against your religion, I can understand that you wouldn't feel right marrying us. But who are you to say that another religion who doesn't care can't? Huh?

What does it matter to you if someone you don't even know gets married? Feels the financial security of marriage? Feels more human than they feel now?

Yeah, that's right. What you are doing is inhuman. Can you still sleep at night, knowing the thousands and thousands of people's emotions you just ruined?

You don't even realize, I bet. Your family, your friends, your neighbors, your co-workers. You KNOW a gay person. Mm-hm. Now imagine how you just wrecked their life. That's right. YOU. You who voted Yes on 8.

All I can say is, open your minds. Please. Just look around you. You are hurting people. And all you had to do was let two people be married. It doesn't affect you, so what reason have you to BAN it?

How would you like it if we banned heterosexual marriage? Bet'cha wouldn't like that!

I've always seen myself growing up, falling in love, marrying that woman, having children...And yet, I see this: The most accepting state toward gay people in the United States of America, is banning gay marriage.

Yeah, I'm only 16. But guess what? Two more years and my vote will be heard. My generation is more accepting.

This has just begun.

We will keep going until we get what is right, what is HUMANE.

People have done it before us: The Native-Americans, the African-Americans. They are human are they not? So are we. And just like skin color, we cannot change who we are.

Don't you get it?

This won't end.

I will fight, my friends will fight, all of the LGBT community and it's heterosexual friends will fight.

WE will fight.

P.S. - Feel free to email me if you want to argue this. I will argue my point until my last breath. If you want to help our fight or just talk, email me. Seriously. We cannot let this go on.

Random Noter: I agree with you completely. Heterosexuals dont need to ask the gay community for permission to marry why should the gay community have to ask! The ban was overturned once and it can happen again we just have to fight! [smashly86] 12/5/2008 11:14:47 PM
I agree with you, totally. I have been in so many arguments about this before, it's unreal. [Rosalie-x] 12/7/2008 4:37:31 PM
