Important. Wednesday, May 30, 2012

I have a client who had a small business that went bust, for various reasons. This all happened last year and she lost her house, her car, and of course her job. So did her parents, who were guarantors for all of her loans, and her mother worked in the business. I helped this woman file for bankruptcy after she sold everything she owned, and still owed mountains of money.

She came into the office the other day, because she needs us to do something else for her, and mentioned that she had a new job. I asked how it was going and she said, "It's fantastic. It's really nice to feel important again." And she is so right. She was out of work for almost a year, surviving on a tiny pension for herself and her two little boys, and now she feels like she has a purpose. She's intelligent, and willing to work, and she wanted it so badly. I'm really happy for her, and it really gets me thinking about how important having a job is. I complain about my job constantly, but I'd be so lost without it. Not just financially - I am relied on, I am in control of many things, no one else has done this job like I have. I'm certainly a force to be reckoned with, as far as the other support staff in the office. I need to remember that. They just had a partners meeting yesterday and I absolutely smashed the billable hours, which makes me happy.

Today's exam was better. The one yesterday was really the most difficult, so I suppose I'm happy that it was over first. Tomorrow's will be slightly painful, the one on Friday should be easy enough.

I agree - if I didn't have a job I'd be bored and aimless and I have no doubt I'd feel like crap. I always find that when I'm on holidays, I'm way less productive in basically all areas of life. I don't use my spare time to actually do stuff.

Well done on the billables, but then I can say that basically every week to you right? ;) And good luck with your last 2 exams!! [Dictynna]

I don't even want to think of my life without my job.
Good luck with your exams. [MadSeason]

I'm glad the lady found another job, that must've been really tough for her to sell everything,. I used to think I hated my job but after sitting at home for 2 months on maternity leave I couldn't believe how much I was looking forward to getting dressed up and going into the office  [doychka] 5/31/2012 7:48:10 AM
Almost done. Good luck! [VanityDespair] 5/31/2012 9:06:11 PM
