Most young people are somewhat clueless while they're still in their teens. All those hormones, all that thinking you know it all, all that thinking you're an adult, all things all of us who are beyond their teens went through, including me, and hopefully grew out of. But some things are just stupendously stupid. For example, I read about a frat member at a fraternity at Marshall University, a sophomore which makes him 19 or 20, in Huntington, West Virginia. He is suing a fellow frat member and the university for injuries he suffered from a fall at a house party in 2011. Apparently the frat member who is being sued decided in a drunken stupor that it would be cool to shoot bottle rockets out of his anus. But instead of launching, the bottle rocket blew up in the defendant frat boy's rectum. It startled the plaintiff, causing him to jump back and fall off the frat house's deck. The plaintiff frat boy became lodged between the deck and an air conditioning unit about four feet off the ground. No word on the injuries suffered by the frat member defendant from having a bottle rocket blow up in his rectum (I guess he's too smart to sue himself for being stupendously stupid). The university is being sued for allegedly failing to supervise the frat party. I can tell you where the claim against the university is going: Nowhere. But they have to defend against it, the cost of which other students will have to absorb in their tuition costs. ===== Pottstown Middle School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, has banned girls from wearing Uggs into class. (Actually all "open top boots" are banned -- I guess that refers to Ugg knock-offs.) They can apparently wear them when walking around campus, but have to change into different shoes before class. It seems that some of these clever teenaged babes, who are apparently addicted to their cell phones, were using the boots to smuggle cell phones into class. Cell phones are permitted at the school, but they have to be turned off and kept in their locker between 7:55 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. From what I remember about junior high is that we wouldn't have had time to change shoes between class. The 8 minutes or whatever we had between classes was spent crossing the campus to get to our next class. And who wants to schlep around a bag of shoes to wear into class? The students posted online on the local newspaper's coverage of the story that they didn't think the ban would work; that the girls would just smuggle in the cell phones in other places like socks and bras. Which I guess would require pat-downs? I foresee problems. How about all the kids just bring their cell phones to class and put them on their desks in plain view, on "silent" or "off" mode? Hide them in plain sight. . . . ===== This story could be a great episode of Sixteen And Pregnant as a follow-up, maybe subtitled "Why Didn't You Grow Up?" or "Don't Have Kids Until You're A Grown-Up" and maybe I'm reading too much into the mother's youth (I was 21 when I had my son), but maybe not. A 38-year-old Florida mother set up a fight between her 17-year-old daughter and a 14-year-old classmate who had been having problems at school. The 14-year-old was contacted by the older girl to come to her apartment after school. When she got there, there was a crowd. During the fight that ensued, the mother yelled at her daughter to hit the 14-year-old harder and even told her to bite the girl. The mother was arrested. Her initial story to the police was that she was held back by others when she tried to stop the fight. But in this age of citizen activists, someone had recorded the video of the incident which clearly showed that the mother's story was false. Because the video showed the mother egging the daughter on, the daughter has been taken from her and the mother is charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and child abuse which is defined in Florida as any "willful act or threatened act that results in physical, mental, or sexual injury harm" to a minor. The mother's rationale was that her daughter and the other girl were having troubles with each other at school and she believed they needed to settle it, otherwise they would continue to fight during school hours. Yeah, I'm still trying to decide if this is because the mother never grew up or, who knows? Maybe her own parents had stupid ideas like this that you settled disputes with violence because yeah, we've seen that work so well.
