Reader's Passwords

If you are an Open Diary Plus subscriber, you can set up to ten Reader’s Passwords on your diary. A reader’s password can be given to other people, to give them access to your private or members-only entries. With a reader’s password, a reader can access entries and leave notes where they normally would not be able to.

For instance, if you have a members-only diary, you can give a reader’s password to somebody who is not a member of Open Diary, so that they can read your diary and leave you notes. Or you can give a reader’s password to a person you want to have access to your private diary, when nobody else does.

Adding reader’s passwords

To add a new reader’s password, go to the Diary Maintenance menu and click Reader Passwords. This will take you to the Reader’s Passwords screen, which lists all of your current passwords. Each password is allowed to have a description, and you can also set each password to have access to private entries.

To add a new password, click the Add new password button at the bottom of the screen. You will be taken to a screen where you can type a new password, and password description, and select private entry access from a dropdown box. Please note that reader’s passwords are limited to eight characters in length. When you are finished entering information, click the Save button.

Changing reader’s passwords

If you want to change a password that is already in your diary, click the edit link next to the password description in the Reader’s Password screen. You will be taken to the edit screen, where you can change the password, description, and private entry access. When you are finished making changes, click the Save button.

Deleting reader’s passwords

To remove a reader’s password from the system, click the delete link next to the password description in the Reader’s Password screen. The password will be permanently removed.

Logging into a diary with a reader’s password

To use a reader’s password, go to the front page of Open Diary (not the front page of the diary itself), and click the OD reader login link in the left-side menu of the page. This will take you to a page where you must enter the diary name you are trying to unlock, and your reader’s password.

If you successfully log in with your reader’s password, you will automatically go to the front page of that diary, where you will be able to read entries and leave notes as a regular reader would. If the password you are using has private entry access, you will be able to read private entries and leave notes on them.

Logging out with a reader’s password

Once you are finished using your reader’s password, you can log out by going back to the front page of Open Diary and clicking the OD Reader logout link in the left-side menu.
