What are the types of Class II wells?
Three types of Class II injection wells are associated with oil and natural gas production.

  1. Enhanced Recovery Wells inject brine, water, steam, polymers, or carbon dioxide into oil-bearing formations to recover residual oil and—in some limited applications—natural gas. This is also known as secondary or tertiary recovery. The injected fluid thins (decreases the viscosity) or displaces small amounts of extractable oil and gas, which is then available for recovery. In a typical configuration, a single injection well is surrounded by multiple production wells. Production wells bring oil and gas to the surface; the UIC Program does not regulate production wells. Enhanced recovery wells are the most numerous type of Class II wells, representing as much as 80 percent of all Class II wells.
  2. Disposal Wells inject brines and other fluids associated with the production of oil and natural gas or natural gas storage operations. When oil and gas are produced, brine is also brought to the surface. The brine is segregated from the oil and is then injected into the same underground formation or a similar formation. Class II disposal wells can only be used to dispose of fluids associated with oil and gas production. Disposal wells represent about 20 percent of Class II wells.

James Van Blaricum, CEO of Signal Oil and Gas, has been an entrepreneur in several industries.  After becoming a medical doctor in the early seventies, Van Blaricum found that his passions were more towards pioneering and running businesses.

James Van Blaricum - Not Guzzling Quite So Much Gas

For 20 years now, workers in Palm Beach County, Fla., have been counting cars with sensors at strategic points along the county's 4,000 miles of roads. And as sure as the tide flows in the nearby Atlantic, nearly every year traffic volume has climbed at least 2%. But in 2007 there was a slight decline in the number of vehicles on the roads. And this year, traffic is down 7.5% through March. "We're seeing a very significant change," says county engineer George Webb. "We're having a good time speculating why."  James Van Blaricum

Signal Oil and Gas - Saturation Point?

Demographic factors may also weigh on gasoline consumption. In the 1950s and '60s, when the postwar march to the suburbs was in full swing and the nation's highways were being built out, gas consumption grew by an average of 4% a year. In more recent years, that rate has moderated to 1.2%. A study released in April by the EIA posited that part of the decline could be attributed to falling population growth and baby boomers exiting their peak driving years. That translates into fewer car sales. "What we were seeing is the automobile market is saturated," says Tancred Lidderdale, senior economist with the EIA. "Even as income continues to grow, we're not going to see the number of cars increase any further." Jim Van Blaricum
