Tuesday Misc.

I hate to write it, but it’s only 78 degrees here.  Since much of the rest of the US is sweltering and 78 would be many degrees cooler, I think I live in the right place today.

However, the heat is moving west and by Friday, we will probably have record temperatures here then.  The current record is 107 degrees.  Day by day, and newscast by newscast, the projected temps rise or fall – yesterday they were talking about 100 plus for days.  The coast will be the place to be- high 60’s, low 70’s.  Hot air will be flowing from the southwest, but a northerly flow will begin Sunday – cooler air from Canada will come down to us.  Temps will probably be in the 80’s next week.

Cool, compared to elsewhere, but I’m not sure that perspective will help much.  My apartment faces south and gets the sun all day and would get hotter if I didn’t have a rotary fan.

Last year when it got hot, the A/C in my van didn’t work, and I – well, maybe not "suffered" but it was very unpleasant, since the driver’s side window doesn’t roll down.  I fixed the A/C myself late last year- the belt was way loose, and maybe it’s not, like, artic, but it is cold.

I performed my good deed for the day this morning.  As a newspaper distributor, I drive around in the early morning hours, and near the Providence Milwaukie Hospital, I saw a fire, a tree blazing away at the side of an apartment building.  I was just about to call 911 on my cellphone when a firetruck rushed by me.  But, it missed the fire, so I followed it and flashed my lights and blew my horn at the firetruck until it stopped, and I directed it back to the fire.  I didn’t want to be in the way, and I had more papers to deliver, so after I got the firetruck pointed in the right way, I kept going, away from the scene.

In the Oregon International Air Show at the Hillsboro airport Sunday, a Hawker Sidley jet was on the ground in a static display. It took off to leave Sunday evening and suffered an apparent engine failure, and the pilot was apparently trying to make it to an open field when the jet went down in a neighbrhood, destroying one house and causing damage to three others.

By all accounts, the pilot, the 73 year old owner, a qualified pilot-instructor who collected and maintained military airplanes, did his best to minimize damage on the ground.  Although his ejection seat had recently been serviced and was "ready to go", he stayed at the controls and did not abandon his plane.  Doing so would have made it crash more severely, and he is hailed as a hero, sacrificing his life to save others.  No one else was hurt.

He apparently did his best to save the lives of people on the ground, although he must have known that he would not survive.

The future of the 19 year old Air Show is now in doubt.  The population of the area around the airport has grown tremendously and the Intel facilities nearby have grown very much.  This may have been the last airshow here.  Regretfully, I did not go this year, although I have once or twice in the past.  Admission for me would have been free, as a Navy vet, but I didn’t feel like I would want to handle the traffic and then go to work a few hours later.  Would that I did though – especially if that was indeed the last airshow.

George Bush is an idiot.  He never looks serious- as if even the most serious stuff is a joke to him.  He always comes off as a stupid frat boy.  I m ashamed of my country, and so is most of the rest of the world.  He has pissed away all of our good standing.  God help us.

Two more memes on my list to write.  It’s been fun and productive – I’ve gained readers in Australia, which is so pleasing!  I like Open Diary and the internet.  Even though I am largely isolated here, I have contacts all around the world!  That is so cool!

I have the night off – time to reseach the next memes and to sleep in the dark.  My van gets to rest too – I’m pretty sure I’m not using it tonight for anything.

It’s supposed to get up to 103 tomorrow here… and it was 99 or 100 today. I envy you, at least for the moment. And kudos for your George Bush mini-rant. <3 I totally agree with you.

July 18, 2006

We had a better day today – not as hot and humid.

July 18, 2006

ryn: I sent you the script for it in email 🙂

*waves from Oz* :0) I am glad memes let me find you too. Good on you for a good deed. I won’t touch the Bush thing since we have our own embarrassment to damage control. You may have seen him since he appears to be attached to your Presidents bum.

Funny that the fire truck went right by the fire…you’d think they’d be better about such things.

July 18, 2006

yeah, i envy your cold weather. sounds like a very brave pilot. i wonder if i could do that.

July 18, 2006

(i’d rather not find out anytime soon.)

~ryn~ I am in Brissie too :0) Yes there are nude beaches here but not so much where I am. I used to come from Mullumbimby/Byron Bay/Uki. The far nth coast of NSW (next state down under Queensland). Its a hippy kind of area and tasteful naturalism is far more the done thing there. Its funny coz my kids grew up there but since coming to the city have gone all prude on me and my hippy self :0)

I’ve been savoring our cool temps too, while reading e-mail from friends & family around the country who are miserable in the heat. I almost needed a light jacket outside today with that gently refrigerated air coming in off Elliot Bay (Puget Sound). But as you say, it’s supposed to heat up here for the weekend so our suffering is coming!

Hi Catmandoo!(happy smile), i am just getting back to you about those resumes I offered to type up for you. Do you still want me to do that? I wrote somes saying that I thought it might be a better idea if I included all the names and addresses of your previous employers. If you want to note me with them I will get started.Again I say it will remain confidential, no-one else will know.

rye, yes I believe that man would be singing “I’m going down in a blaze of glory!” If he had known that song. I believe he is a hero.It would take a tremendous amout of courage to stay in the chair when you know full well that there is an eject button right there beside you.He must have loved the people down below, more than his own life to take the stand to save all he could,

even if it ment losing his own life. He reminds me of Jesus Christ who did the same thing for us.

You also remind me of Jesus today too. It was very unselfish of you to go out of your way to bring back the fire brigade to the burning tree.(By the way I saw you do that in my dream of you! I am still amazed this dream is coming true day by day!)Anyway, now that you have really done that in true life, the impact is greater. You might realise it, but there were people sleeping inthat building.

They didn’t know about the fire until the fire truck started putting out the fire. if it wasn’t for you, that fire might have caught the whole apartment block on fire, and those people would have been killed by smoke inhalation! So you are a humble hero too! i think God knows you ar ehis, and he used you to protect those people. Who knows maybe someone will be used by God to save you from

an apartment fire too!!

Do you have sun blinds to repellall the heat that hits your windows? I guess it would be difficult to install them when you are up so high.I read that the glass can cause a room to heat up to over 5o% hotter when the sun hits it.You should close your blinds and curtians. They would help repell the heat too, although not as much as if the blinds were out side. The white ones are the best,

becaus ethey are much more reflective… I knwo all about hot rooms here in summer!!! What would 40 degrees celcius work out to be in faranheight?

I’d better go, I am hogging your notes page…smile.Bye,

He is such an idiot and I cannot believe people voted him a second time. I don’t thin americans are bad. I do however think americans and your brother canadians have an obesity problem though.

WTG with directing the firetruck. Enjoy your night off work!

I love the heat, as long as it is not humid. Tragic about the plane crash. My computer is my companion too – I love it!

I so agree with you about our president. He always looks like he’s smirking a condescending idiotic smirk. It rubs me the wrong way. Then his dippy way of talking, and he just sounds so utterly idiotic. I cant even really laugh at his mistakes because they are just so very disturbing. I hope people of the world know that bush doesnt really represent us. sigh.

Hi!Yes it would be good to actually see the fire damage for yourself. But In my dream it wasn’t too bad, just some scortching on the apartment walls.

July 19, 2006

You were in the right place at the right time….and a good thing, too, for the people involved in the fire!! I agree about Dubya. He doesn’t look serious because he never really “gets it.” It’s a darn shame about the damage the airplane incident. And…ONLY 78????!!!! I wish it was only 78 heeeeeeeeeeere!!!!! hugs, Weesprite

July 19, 2006

If my Pa, an awesome man that ran out local fire department in Downhome, was still alive, he’d shake your hand for pointing the way to the fire.

July 19, 2006

Good on you, redirecting the fire engine.

July 19, 2006

aw, my hero. 😉 Sorry i’ve been bad at leaving notes! I’m trying I really am!

July 19, 2006

I still have five memes to write. They are more time consuming than the average entry, at least for me. I worry too much that the person will not enjoy what I’ve written, or be disappointed in some way.
