I’ve done this before
So, I screwed up last night and assumed that the video card had gone "bad" because the big monitor was all blue. Sigh. I went to "device manager" and told it to update the video card . The last time I did that, it screwed up the machine and it would not start.
Same thing again – the new update downloaded and… the computer never restarted. Damn.
Obviously it’s working – right or not – again.
Lessons learned (or re-learned):
1. If the monitor is all blue, FIRST check the connections on back of the computer.
2. Do not, under any circumstances, download that video card file – You KNOW what happens.

It’s not making it work that takes so long, really – I can and have done that in a few hours. It’s the download times from Microsoft that take FOREVER, and oh boy, there have been, so far, several hundred updates and patches and…. My Windows XP is OLD by computer standards, but I’m keeping this machine alive because I can’t replace it.
I have a counselor appointment today at 2. I finally went to bed at 6 this morning, and set alarms and everything.
The phone rang and woke me up, and without my glasses on, (and backwards too, I guess) I looked at the clock across the room and saw "2:35", even though it was 10:35. I freaked -" I’m missing my second appointment!" and called and left an "I’m so sorry" message. By this time, I had my glasses on and was coming awake, and saw… NO it’s not AFTER 2, and I’m not late or missing my appointment.
Cue Homer Simpson: "DOH!"
I’ll have to re-edit a couple hundred pics, but they aren’t "lost", they are still on the SD cards in the cameras. I did lose many edited pictures, and the posts I had planned for my drive to the Gorge on Saturday will take longer to post.
If that 2 Tb USB drive that is my "cloud" ever dies, I’ll be in a world of hurt, but it works now and i didn’t loose "too much".
Except a little pride and, well, I guess I can call it a "learning experience".
Ah! There’s the 11:30 alarm I set!. Mondays….

I still have XP on my desktop computer and it works just fine…a little slow though. That time thing is toooo funny! I’ve done that before. I am so blind without glasses or contacts!

We’re still running XP on all of our computers, too. No point in upgrading if you don’t absolutely have to, right?

hate that when that happens glad you got it working again

My son has Windows XP on his home computer (not his laptop which is an Apple). It’s the best operating system Microsoft ever put out and he doesn’t ever want to update it for just that reason. I have Windows 7 and it’s stupid and heard that Windows 8 is also crap. Keep a couple of thumb drives with the same backup stuff on them. Remember backing up to those 5 1/4″ floppies? Those saved me more than once. 🙂 I hate having an appointment like that and getting a weird thing in my head that I’m late when I’m not. It usually happens early in the day and then taints the whole day with its feeling of panic. Ugh.
