MayMetMo 2020 #12: Fanatical for Feast
What started as a lovely meal between friends had become unglued. A rise in disagreement had divided the table into the right and left sides while the head and heart at either end had long ago established an “Us against Them” platform that only served to befuddle the guests and turn them further on each other. What once had been a conversation about the dinner itself and a blessing of the host to invite all who wished a fine meal, had descended into arguments over the number of servings per plate and who had brought more and therefore deserved preferential treatment. Rage followed as men began to eat with their hands from the serving trays, women plucked wine bottles from the table like grapes and children piled desserts on their plates and distracted others in order to reach coveted goods faster. None were hungry, or thirsty or longing, yet the fear and the failings of their imagination that fanaticism of the meal itself became the drive. The accumulation of food and tearing down the opposing side took away from what the gathering was supposed to represent with wanton fanaticism prevailing, leaving only a mess for those that did not get up and walk away to clean up. Long after the remnants spoiled and soiled the room and home. The hosts decided it would be best to only cook for a few or none ever again.
