Welcome to the diary of a 40-something who’s been back in his home town for a few years now, after more than a decade away. It snows here, that's my main gripe. Despite some whining I'm a pretty simple guy living a pretty simple life, and not a bad one at that. Last but not least, I’m glad OD is back. I can’t believe it’s been 17 years.

Yeah, that changed everything

A couple weeks ago I was told they were letting us work from home for a couple days because of the coronavirus stuff. No big deal, I figured. My plan: work from home on Friday, a slower day, to work out the bugs just in case I had to stay home on Monday. I had…

I wasn’t hired for one job at work for which I was well qualified. They hired someone who’d been there for a year, not seven. There is another job opening where I won’t be considered. I know it. The truth often lies somewhere in the middle on these things. I really want to put the…

I still dislike my job. I still think my boss is a snake. I feel like I’m on an island in the office. I’m not thrilled with work. I’ve gone on a couple dates with a swell woman, though. Let’s hope that continues.

I had a really bad night at work Saturday and ... I want to give up. I know I can’t. I know I gotta be an adult and do my job. I also called in sick yesterday. I wasn’t feeling well — legitimately. My head is all messed up. I feel like I’m failing at…

But I do. A. Had a really relaxing vacation in early April. Made my first trip to Southern California. Beautiful weather; I get now why people go there and stay forever. It was at the end of a rather cold spell here, so I really appreciated the warmth and the sun. Met up with a…

This may not meet the exact criteria here... This afternoon, I bought cubby storage shelves off Craigslist. I’ve never wanted to spend on new things and hey, it’s good to recycle. And yeah, it’s decent. I strapped it to the roof and brought it home. It was big. And bulky. Then I tried to carry&he...

  • Improv
    March 4, 2019
A couple months ago I started taking a 101-level improv class. It’s been challenging and fun at the same time. At the end of every semester, you do a show to show off what you’ve learned. Mine was tonight. I feel like I bombed. But I did it. And I made it through that. That’s…

So I interviewed for a job the other week that I'd really like to have. It'd be working for a former boss of mine -- we weren't super close, but also on relatively good terms -- in a position outside journalism, but somewhere where I'd still use my writing skills. It'd call for a pay…

That I’m rude or standoffish. I bring it on myself to a degree. Social interaction with anyone whom I don’t consider a friend is ... painful. I don’t dig small talk. It’s one thing to smile and wave at someone, it’s another to have a manufactured conversation just because. I also assume most peop...

(Note: Stream of consciousness post, no editing.) It’s so weird when you connect with someone through one of these sites, especially when it was in the early days of OD: back when we treasured anonymity (and assumed we had it), in a much more innocent time where you usually didn’t have to worry a...
