More on Pet Adoptions

There was an interesting discussion going on in the notes of my previous entry – getting mutts from shelters versus looking for a specific breed (labradoodles and persians were mentioned).

On the breed specific discussion…

We have 2 dachshunds right now – Blue was a dachshund too, he passed last Feb and we got Cera a couple of month later.

So, we completely understand the desires for those breed specific characteristics – we like dachshunds, we like their personalities, we even like their less attractive characteristics (food-hunds – greedy when it comes to food!).

Remember that there are breed specific rescue organizations for almost every breed of anything out there.  We’ve gotten all three of our dachshunds from the DRNA – Dachshund Rescue of North America.  I’ve been offered dogs that were being transported half way across the country – at no extra charge other than the basic adoption fee.  Dogs, cats, and I don’t know what else.

So, don’t give up on an adoption just because you’re looking for a specific breed.  You can find just about any breed, any age, any sex, any medical condition that you might be interested in.  DRNA had a section of their website devoted to "Special Needs" dogs, for those of you with extremely big hearts.  DRNA had dogs with all sorts of chronic problems, diseases, conditions, some who were pretty old, and they needed good homes for their last years.  We couldn’t go there this time around….

we were originally looking at adopting a youngish lab (under 5) from a rescue place and since we live in an apartment we were automatically told no. I can totally understand why they don’t trust people to actually walk/exercise their dogs; we have since gotten a puppy and he is exercised a lot everyday. i don’t regret the puppy but i do wish we could have “saved” another lab.

I’ve found all my pets. Eventually, when the travel bug has left my system I’ll get another dog – a Bedlington Terrier. I’ve wanted one since I was about 8 years old. I figure I’ll check with a rescue service at that time.

You can search by breed, age, sex, gender, etc on http://www.petfinder.com – it’s a great site.

You… impress me. What a kind heart. :o)

I am a big supporter of rescue shelters. The rescue shelter I used to volunteer at was having a yard sale to raise money one January and they needed donations – things to sell to make money not actually money so I donted most of my Christmas gifts. My friend was overwhelmed but to me it made sense. I didn’t have a lot of money but I did have stuff she could sell to make money. If people would just make the effort it could really make a difference. There are so many animals that need good homes, it kills me when someone pays hundreds and thousands of dollars to a pet store or breeder.
