Blue Blue Dress – Chapter 10.1

I can’t believe it’s been a YEAR since I put up anything for Blue Blue Dress! I actually have almost an entire chapter AFTER what I last posted. Jeesh.

I suck, it’s ok.

So anyway, if you haven’t read it, you can go to my diary front page and make sure you are looking at the "Chapter View" (found on the Left side. Then select the chapter (found at the bottom of the box on the right with all the entries listed) and go to Blue Blue Dress – Novel… that is where all the chapters are. If you’re that interested, you might want to read Petit Noir (in it’s own chapter), it is the story telling events before BBD.

Also, all of these are in rough draft form. I know there are mistakes 🙂

And now!!!

Chapter 10: The Other Side

10.1

She looked up at her mother with a look of disbelief and fear that somehow muddied into reluctant hope twirling across her eyes as they misted with tears she tried to hold back.

“I’m sure you could use the time away… it’s been a rough time for you. I trust you…”

Alexis watched her mother’s mouth move as the words registered. She couldn’t stop the smile as it crept along her cheeks.

“Thank you Mommy… thank you. I’m gonna go get ready!”

For the first time since she could clearly recall, a flutter of excitement flurried up into her throat as she practically skipped up the hall to her room. She was being set free for an entire weekend. She was being allowed the unheard of luxury of a staying overnight somewhere that wasn’t under the intense watchful gaze of her mother. She was going to be a normal girl for once… it barely seemed real.

She didn’t want the chance to slip from her fingers as she frantically grabbed her things and shoved them into a bag. She didn’t want to waste time or have her mother literally change her mind and lock her into her room for the rest of the summer. She simply had to go. She knew that the opportunity to spend time with her closest friend would be rare as the summer months drug on in their silent monotony. But the urge to go extended beyond simply spending time with her closest friend. There was another reason entirely.

Jordan would be there.

They had barely spoken the last few weeks of school, but there was no need to say words that would just cloud up their minds. Instead, they let things ease back into the way they were. Their eyes still met in with quiet intensity, their fingertips brushing together during fleeting stolen moments. The wound that had ripped between them slowly healed with the best remedy for the situation, which was simply peaceful quiet time.

As they celebrated the final day of school Brenda enthusiastically demanded that Alexis come to her end of school campout. Several of their friends were invited, even boys thanks to Jordan! There would be tents set up on the expanse of land behind her house, a bonfire and even a hike to the top of the moutnain. They would cook everything outside and tell ghost stories next to the fire. All things that Alexis had only read about in books, but had never thought she’d get to do with her mother’s short leash and even shorter grasp on sanity.

She could hardly believe it was real as her mother smiled and jingled the car keys to signal she would drop her off and she was still actually accepting the prospect of her daughter being gone for 2 whole days and nights. Alexis couldn’t help holding her breath as they drove, she waited for the humming or singing to start, for the car to slow down and pull over, for her mother’s eyes to change to cold expressionless glass and for her entire dream to come crashing around her.

She didn’t exhale fully until her mother was pulling away and the car was completely out of site. And even then she waited for the screeching breaks and the return of the car as if it was coming from hell itself and was ready to take her back into her eternal summer misery.

But it never came. She stared at the door to her friends house for what seemed like hours. Her tormented thoughts interrupted as Brenda squealed and beckoned to her from the porch. Alexis smiled and put the biggest smile on her face that she could muster. She took a few steps toward the house and prepared herself to venture into a world that she was more than ready to become a part of. A world that was normal.

She followed her friend inside and was greeted by everyone that had gotten there before her. She couldn’t stop the light from bubbling up into her laughter as they hiked out to the campsite that lay a few miles from the house. She found a natural talent for slamming tent spikes into the ground with the heavy rubber mallet and soon found herself moving from tent to tent helping those who were struggling. They formed a loose circle of about 10 tents around the central campfire area. One side for boys and the other for girls. Brenda’s parents erected a large two room tent in the center as sort of a central point so that they could keep an eye on the co-eds who would surely try to sneak into each other’s tents during the twilight hours.

It wasn’t until they began to get things ready for dinner that Alexis stopped long enough to take notice of Jordan, who had his own group of friends a few yards away in the boy section of the camp. She had been so caught up it was almost like she forgot he was there, butit was impossible to deny his presence once he caught her eye and she found herself seeking him out every few seconds.

She noticed him staring before he walked deeper into a grove of trees and something tugged at her to follow him. She put down the bag of hamburger buns she had retrieved from the large tent on the table next to the grill that was heating up.

“Uhh, if it’s ok, I’m gonna scope out a good bathroom spot. I don’t want to get lost if I have to go at night.”

She tried to look natural as she she waited for a response.

“Well that’s why I insist that you guys use the buddy system, ok? And don’t’ foget your cell phones at all times,” Brenda’s mom said as she continued to set up the hot dogs and hamburgers. “But go ahead and scope it out while it’s still sunny. Remember it should be down wind and not on a slant that is going to reach the camp… so you should probably head that way.”

To Alexis’ delight she pointed in the very direction Jordan had disappeared a few minutes earlier. She nodded and quickly trotted away hoping that Brenda or any of the other girls wouldn’t notice her leaving and want to follow along.

It would seem that luck was on her side because she was out of sight darting through the crunching leaves without interruption. She wasn’t quite sure where she was going, but she knew that either she’d find Jordan… or a suitable place to squat in the middle of the night if nature called. She had just passed a large clump of trees with wide trunks when she caught movement in the corner of her eye. She stopped to turn and found herself face to face with Jordan.

His eyes seemed to gleam as his arms circled her waist and pulled her close to him. Their lips seemed magnetized as they fell into a soft prolonged kiss. His breathing slowed to an almost imperceptible whisper as she felt his lips pull away a few aching inches from her own.

“Please forgive me.”

She opened her eyes. A tear was sliding down his face and she reached out to it without a thought.

”Already done.”
