Since my head is spinning straight off my shoulders right now, I think it’s time for a break. We’re in the midst of clearing seniors to graduate. This would not actually be a terribly difficult thing, except that our spawn of Satan new computer system is so awkward, user-unfriendly, and full of incorrect information that every student takes hours to clear. HOURS. Involving six different screens which each take about fifteen steps to navigate through to access all the info you need. This is something that we could get off two screens, one click each, on our previous system. Which I hated because I thought it was outdated and user-unfriendly. Silly me! The old system actually is still here, kind of, since the new system is having some issues. Like how different screens don’t speak to one another, so, for example, a student’s GPA can be one thing on one screen and something else entirely on another screen. That’s SO not good. Of course the old system may or may not be updated, so we really can’t count on it being right either. This is causing us even more work, as one of the Registrar’s office people asked us to please please please check all the screens that show GPAs and let them know if they don’t agree. So they can fix it. Can’t they run a report of some sort and find the ones that don’t agree?? Well, you’d think they could, but I guess it’s easier to have us do it. This is one of the people we actually like over there so D agreed to do it, although I think she’s kind of regretting it now.
At least these problems and annoyances are stemming from idiots who implemented a new system without proper planning system issues and not the job itself. At least I’m not in the College of Ed!!!!! And we are actually all shutting our doors so that we can work in peace and quiet, uninterrupted. Imagine that! That’s kind of funny, really, since it’s very quiet here anyway. We don’t truly NEED to shut our doors, but I’m fine with my doors shut.
Still, it’s time for a break. After too many of these in a row, I start getting cranky and annoyed when I run across students who think they are graduating in December yet haven’t had, oh, FIFTEEN HOURS OF THEIR MAJOR. Like one I just did, who had already applied once to graduate in August but was lacking an 8 hour internship and six hours of classes for her minor and had two incompletes still for spring classes. So, duh, of course she didn’t graduate. Well, she’s applied again to graduate, is still lacking the internship, is still lacking six hours of coursework for her minor, and still has one incomplete. The other incomplete has turned into an F. She didn’t take any classes this summer; she isn’t enrolled in any classes this semester. I want to ask her just exactly how in the HELL she thinks she’s graduating when she still has exactly the same problems that kept her from graduating LAST time she applied to graduate???? Well, with the added problem of having an incomplete turn into an F. It’s not like she doesn’t know – part of this whole process involves sending them letters now telling them what, if anything they are missing, and then sending them another letter after this semester if they didn’t clear up their shortages.
Maybe she just enjoys filling out the application and paying that $15 fee every semester.
How about some pictures from the Land of Oz? Which was lots of fun, as usual, although every year the crowds get worse. And the ticket prices go up. This year it was FIFTEEN DOLLARS to get in. The first time they opened the park, in 1995, it was $5. Last year it was $12. Kim and two of her friends met us up there, and they had to wait to get a parking place – the lot was full when they got there. The lot is a huge field. We wanted to go both days, but sure didn’t want to pay $60 to walk around an abandoned theme park. It’s not like there’s anything to do but walk through it – they supposedly put this money into improvements but that seems to mostly be for costumes and paint. Next year I think we’re going to volunteer to help before they open, which would get us in free at least one day.
It was gorgeous weather – in the 70s and sunny. Well, at least until Kim and her friends arrived. One isn’t the slightest bit interested in Oz but has come up two years now because the other one loves it. Last year it was freezing and drizzling rain – this year there wasn’t a cloud in the sky until they got there, whereupon it began to sprinkle. But never did rain much and it was so warm a lot of people were in shorts.
Baker B and I arrived pretty early, so it wasn’t crowded yet – although I’m not sure how I got a picture with NOBODY on the Yellow Brick Road –
Dorothy and Glenda – a popular pair. They were everywhere!
The Tin Man. Not having the disturbing costume issues he had last year. When we were very glad he was wearing real underwear.
View from the Lookout –
Inside the museum – Wall O’ Books. I read all the Baum ones about fifty times each, too, so I LOVE this.
Baker B and Friends:
A Talking Tree. There are more every year, so I guess that’s one thing they’re spending all that money on.
I actually let Baker B take my picture. A rare event!
Okay, the rest will have to wait for later, as my time is up. If I can figure out how, I’m even going to post a video I took with my camera going through the cellar in the tornado – that turned out much better than I’d expected it to –
i remember you visiting Oz last year. great pics! you look good, so take more pics of yourself.

Wow! Where is this place, I never heard of it. It looks so pretty there, and so do you, by the way.

Had a chance to pick up any of the G MacGuire books? I loved Wicked, didn’t go anywhere, really, but the concept was cool and the writing impeccable.

ryn: you think the card idea is good? ok then, i’ll do that.

Baker B is holding up the Scarecrow!! He never let any of us do that. And I love your hair. And you look quite thin – what are you doing? BD is talking about starting the Wizard of Oz series during her Christmas break.

i so enjoy reading your entries! and oz looks like a fun event even if they did not have everything they should have for that kind of money!

All great pics as always. I love the pics of you and Baker B except that you both look YOUNGER than when we met!! Darnit rasafrackarackin dangit! No, I’m not jealous at all. hehe. You hair looks great by the way. Great cut! It looks as though they gave the Yellow Brick Road a shiny new coat. I like the Lookout pic too, except I wish that horrible condo building on Beech was gone forever.

That yellow brick road is the niftiest thing. I’d like to visit that one day.

Tell your student she can send me $15 every semester – no applications required! 😀 Your pictures are terrific.

Oh, man! I thought you were over the hassles of admission office type stuff! Bummer! And that’s Baker B under the scarecrow? He’s very youthful looking. And YOU, missy, are the cutest ever!!

At least your old computer system is available. Where I work they immediately switch from one version of a program straight to the new one without testing. The mentality there is “It will work because i say so.” It troubles me because I used to work in IT and anyone with sense knows that you test, then run in parallel until the new version works ok. When I was little and visited Oz, I do remember going through the house “during the tornado”. I didn’t see Toto.

yeah! a picture of you! you should let him take more! you are beautiful! the picture of the yellow brick road is very nice! I submitted my application for graduation last night – for spring! I give myself plenty of time!

I can so empathize with you on the Spawn of Satan computer system. You’re on the unlucky user side. I’m on the here you have to use this side. In fact, at this point in the project, I’m working with the crazy Arab men who I used to report to. They’re amazingly nice to me now. And I actually feel sorry for them. Their current system is linked spreadsheets. Hit the tab button, go to the nextfield. Type data in field, done. In the new system, they have to mouse click over three screens to input their data. Stupid lack of planning. Governmental agencies are sitting ducks for predatory vendors.

I had told BD about your reading habits – it made her smile.

It does look like a fabulous weather day! And like everyone else said…your hair looks great and I like the tin man shot alot. $15 though? Wow. Everybody here is always complaining about food smells and noise and I just have to laugh, it is so quiet and smells so okay. I guess it is all a question of perspective.

Housecleaners in c’ville earn $20/hour. Not bad. Bill them. 🙂

ryn: thanx for the info. I hope to be in that area sometime, I live in the south so its possible. I would love to see that.

Monday is not too late at all. I figure we’ll all know for sure what’s going on Thursday night. Can she bring the cats with her? I doubt Mama and Daddy would mind if they stayed in the laundry room or basement.

Great pics! I’d love to go there someday, it’s gorgeous and looks like it’s so much fun. I’ll say it’s a rare day you have a picture taken, what is this the 2nd one in your OD? You look great!(love your hair color.) The video sounds cool, hope you can find a way to post it. Computers are the spawn of satan, and those students sound about as frustrating. Can you scream behind those closed doors?

I almost feel like I go on these trips to Oz each year with you! And a photo of your good self is a rare event indeed but it makes it all the better when we do see you. Tell you what though – we haven’t seen one of Baker B & you together yet – there you go – that’s your next project!

You look gorgeous! I always look forward to your Oz pics. Just downloaded the new Radiohead. Uck. I’m dreadfully disappointed. So I guess it’s a good thing I got utterly confused by the currency calculator and couldn’t figure out how to turn pounds into dollars and just got frustrated and ended up not paying anything.
