You Call That a Verdict?

Her Wednesday email said something along the lines of, “The verdict is in, come on over and we’ll discuss it.” I didn’t have time until Monday and I couldn’t wait that long, so I called and asked if she could tell me over the phone.

My claim, she said, was found ‘unsubstantiated’. It seems everyone who testified agreed I would not lie (small comfort that my friends vouch for my integrity), but no one saw him do it. No one could confirm that particular guy was behind me at that particular time. Even though Heather swears she said so in her statement.

This is all beside the point. The question I really want to ask is, what if he’d trapped me in a room alone and mauled me there? My word is not enough? The guy gets off because he’s smart enough to be sly? Hell, his wife was right next to him, I coulda told them that.

To top it off, now they’re badgering me for another statement because I let slip that one of the witnesses told me she lied in her testimony. Even though “it won’t make any difference in the outcome” apparently I am now liable for her childless unwillingness to ‘fess up. My rep swears it won’t come back to me — I have to work with her, after all — but she also promised that Heather’s testimony would be enough to substantiate my claim and that the victim almost always wins. To put it mildly, my confidence in their ‘justice’ system is a bit shaken.

Fuckers.
