What’s in a surname?

I am going to legally change my name. I am keeping the Samantha Josephine but not the Hunter. I feel like the entire clan has forsaken me, esp, my mom Debbie. She refuses to acknowledge that I am her daughter, so, I am using my dad’s name which is Westner. So, instead of Samantha Josephine Hunter, I am Samantha Josephine Westner.
