Fasting time again…
Like I said, it’s feast or famine on this job, and it looks like it’s famine time now. I haven’t had any work since Thursday, and that was just a few hours, driving a mini-bus on a tour for the Port of Portland at Terminal 6. (it was interesting to listen to the tour guide, talking about the port and its operations to the international group of kids – college? – that were aboard)
No calls at all from work though, and I guess I was counting on my "usual" Monday night high school take-home run – and the Wednesday one this week, forgetting that school kids get longer vacations than anyone else. It looks like a dead week.
I did save some from the feasting times, and I did just make my car and insurance payments. I paid down the credit card a lot, so this isn’t like, a total disaster, but I am beginning to wonder if I might not be better advised to find a more regular job – one with a predictable schedule and a regular paycheck.
It looks like a rainy week – every day has rain predicted, so snow in the mountains too. I haven’t driven much of anywhere in my car, although I want to. There just doesn’t seem to be much of anywhere to go, and gas costs money. I didn’t drive at all yesterday – I just walked up to "the center of town". Sellwood was, once upon a time, a separate city from Portland, and we still have a kind of downtown – the Starbucks is up there, along with "my" grocery store and the take and bake pizza chain, PLaid Pantry, and my bank. Everything I "need" is in walking distance, something I’ve always really liked about where I live.
By the way, the end of January will mark thirteen years I have lived here, in the same apartment. I never would have imagined THAT before, but here I am, in 2011.
I walked up to the Plaid Pantry yesterday and and wore my Navy Peacoat. I had not worn it in a while – and realized that it has been THIRTY years since I got that coat. I joined the Navy in 1982 (ok, so 29 years, but still, o.m.g). I talked a couple of hours yesterday on the phone to a Navy buddy, and oh my, time has gone by. The 80’s are a long time ago now – more than a life-time, for some of the people I talk to.
People have asked me "what are you doing for Thanksgiving". In 2007, no one did and I just bought a bottle of Wild Turkey and a turkey pot pie and said "It’s ok". This year, coworkers and friends have asked me out, but I have family to go hang out with – my cousin rediscovered me in 2009, and we are going to his wife’s family Thanksgiving on Thursday.
Yay for that, anyway.

Nice that you are a wanted man for Thanksgiving! Budgeting is hard anyway let alone flip flop income. Hope it doesn’t rain too much!

Not many people could wear an article of clothing from 30 years ago – I certainly could not. Congrats on keeping your “figure”. Is there a more masculine word – must be – whatever it is – that is the word I mean! 🙂
