The Saturday papers (and one more thing)

Last night I took my camera with me to work.  The Saturday and Sunday papers are the only ones during the week are the only ones not zoned for the different counties I deliver in – my two routes are in Clackamas county and Multnomah county.

Since the papers aren’t zoned, I only need to get one set of papers for both routes, so I felt like I had enough time to take a few pictures.  During the week, I hurry through the south route so I can get back and get my Portland papers from the plant and get ’em delivered before people start complaining that their papers are late. (cuz they do)

On Saturdays, I do the Portland route first and then the south route, in Milwaukie.  I get all the papers at once; for Saturdays, all 735 of them.  About mid-way through my run last night, I remembered I had my camera with me and took a few pictures.  I was in my own nieghborhood, where I’ve seen some nice flowers in planters hanging from the light poles around here:

Nice, hmm?

Well, I thought so anyway, but then I thought I’d take a pic of my van and show what delivering the papers looks like:

I had 24 bundles of 30 plus 15 more, but by this time I had gotten rid of 2/3rds of them and had covered about thirty miles.

A few blocks away, I took  this pic, of a sticker I found on one of my street racks:

not everyone likes my paper

I kinda liked the sticker so I peeled it off the rack and stuck it on my dashboard.

Kinda fits, doncha think?

Down in Milwaukie, right downtown, they have flowers in pots hanging from the light posts too.

I’ll take my camera with me again and get some other shots next time.

(one more thing)

I do not get food stamps.  I haven’t for years.  I have paid my own way the best I can.  I am not a societal leech. I Iive where I do because I was disabled when I came here, and am very definately low income.  The bus driving job will be permanent part time and I will still make less than "average income".  I have taken less that I am entitled to, and do not work the system for more than I deserve.  I was unable to work for four years because of the brain injury, not because I am lazy.  SS has not recognised that, so I am working on making it so.  I challenge anyone who thinks I am in the wrong  to get hit in the head real hard, have their brain split in three pieces, lay in a coma for weeks, to get little to no support after the insurance runs out, and to do any better than I have.

I’ve got a bat.  I’ll help you there, if you want real proof.

From now on, whenever I have to deal with our Word Processing dept. at work, behind my professional facade I’m going to be thinking…. word prostitute…. and it’s all your fault!

Sorry, left the note on the previous entry. 🙂

What does Word Prostitute mean? Wow! That magenta colored petunia looks JUST like the one hanging in MY yard! How awesome is that?!

August 6, 2006

Is a word prostitute the same as a note whore? :o) !! I love those white petunias! And love, also, towns that have hanging baskets of flowers on the lightposts. hugs, Weesprite

The sticker is pretty good. Must have been someone’s disdain for newpapers or the media in general that caused that one to arise from the ether.

August 6, 2006

I”m not sure what it means but it would sure get attention as a bumper sticker. Other drivers would be scratching their head and mumbling…..”Wonder what it means”???

I love that sticker! If you are a Word Prostitute, am I your John? Today when I heard the Sunday newspaper THAP on our little front porch, I said to myself, thank God for the newspaper guy. And thanks, NorthwesternCat!

Ahh seeing those papers sure brings back memories. I do like the sticker also. It’s cute. I hope that you’re having some fun today. Take care.

I like the sign. I don’t think Word Prostitute is a bad thing 🙂

Goodness! A little anger here! Did someone make a negative comment? I have had aid when I need it, when I was a single mom abandoned by my ex, getting no child support, and my husband is getting SSI and Medicaid right now. I am grateful for the help, and I figure I have paid taxes for years and years. So has he. These programs are for people like us….

Well Cat I certianly don’t think you are lazy!!!! Lifting all those papers every day must take a lot of time and effort. It must be a good way to keep strong.Your back, arms and legs probably have benefited fromt his work greatly…. So be prepared to lose a bit of muscle if you swap jobs. I love petunias. What a nice way to brightne up the streets by puttin gthem in baskets on the light poles.

No thanks, I’ll take your word for it. No bat for me!

I am a single mum and currently on SS to get by. I work as much as I can and in the past that has been quite a bit. Right now I am not working at all since I am trying to set up a job where I might make enough to get off SS all together. My ex only makes things worse and luckily he has nothing to do with us financially or personally. I don’t think I am lazy any more than you. We are doing what wecan in the circumstances we have had handed to us. I am sorry if someone made you feel otherwise. People are so horrible sometimes. I have had truly nasty things thrown at me as a single Mum and yet I am the one here trying to do the right thing. Don’t listen to mean spirited stupid people. Know in your own heart what is true and pity them. I have learnt to say to them “I am very pleased for you that your life has been so blessed that you have absolutely no understanding of my life at all”.

agree with Sally

hm, wondering what launched that last paragraph! must have missed something. in any case, i think “word prostitute” is very funny. i would have taken it and put it somewhere too, lol!

August 6, 2006

sorry you got the wrong idea from what i said but you could lose your apartment with your new job and still be worse off then you are now.i was not saying that you are lazy.

August 6, 2006

unfortuntely out help system is not made to get off it and survive.

August 6, 2006

i likes the sticker!!!

Well, you are quite the feisty boy tonight! Great flash photos of those flowers. The flash seems to make the flowers even more the centre of the piece as the background fades out.

August 7, 2006

The way you handle your life is an inspiration to us all.

August 7, 2006

Well, I like the way you live your life. You are the kind of person who can be happy without much…. and that is what I try to be, and what I admire most in people, too. Here’s wishing you a good day! hugs, Weesprite

“Word Prostitute” I love it! I could be slang as in, “Word, prostitute.” or literary! 🙂 Great photos. I used to deliver newspapers (and still work for a newspaper) – 200 bundles at 100 copies/ bundle. It was rough – start at 4am, end at 8pm. Those were the days of summer. :- My best to you; SS is the devil, alongside Insurance companies. They’re supposed to “Help” people, not hinder them. Grr.
