Why do I have to pay for Open Diary?

The fee for Open Diary membership is $3.99 per month, or $39.99 if you buy an annual subscription. As a member, you can pay month-to-month – and when you join, you get your first thirty days free. So, why do you have to pay to use OD?

We understand that a lot of the rest of the Internet is “free”, and that you don’t usually pay for the other websites you use. However, there’s a lot of reasons why making Open Diary a paid site made sense to us. There are benefits for all of Open Diary, and for you as a member:

  1. Open Diary will never have ads on our diaries and member pages. Paid memberships mean that we don’t have to pollute your experience with advertising, clickbait, and sponsored content that clutter up and dilute the community.
  2. Since we don’t have to satisfy advertisers, we don’t manipulate your feed. There are no algorithms or calculations changing what you see or don’t see in your feed and on the site – all of that is completely in your control, you decide what you see.
  3. Open Diary does not and will not collect personal data on your usage patterns, your interests, your entries, or anything else you do on the site. We don’t resell data like this, or post it into cookies for other search engines and advertising systems to find.
  4. Having paid memberships helps us to keep a safe and friendly community. Since members are paying for their experience, we avoid having people who will join just to cause trouble or attack other members. Since all members invest in the OD experience, they are more likely to respect it.
  5. Most internet businesses have to rely on advertising and sponsor revenue to survive – and this means that their number one priority is making more ad sales and getting more sponsors. By having paid memberships, we can concentrate our business on you, the member – so we can make our number one goal that you have a great Open Diary experience.

In exchange for your payment for an Open Diary subscription, we make this pledge to you:

Open Diary will be focused on delivering the best experience possible for you as our number one priority. We will not sell your personal data or manipulate your user experience to make more money for the site. Our members commit to the same philosophy by supporting Open Diary and the Open Diary Rules.

And for all of this… I thank you!

January 4, 2018

@sillysillysandee you’re welcome!

I have no problems at all with paying, and it’s a reasonable fee. In fact, I’ve wished for ages that Prosebox would go to paid so it could get rid of the ads and improve the overall site. This does bring back memories of the very early OD days, and the Free vs Paid OD Wars!

February 10, 2018

@ednamillion thanks! It does, but no wars this time 🙂 since we will only be going one route.

January 9, 2018

Thank you very much. I trust in you and Diary Mistress, **by the way, does Diary Mistress have a diary? lol*** Anyway Thank you very much!!

February 10, 2018

@butterfly4him thanks! She does, she will be posting again sometime in the future.

February 13, 2018

@opendiaryhelp : Oh that’s wonderful, thank you!! 🙂

I will not use / see my diary after 30 free days? If I did not pay for it?

February 10, 2018

@d_5 after 30 days you will still be able to see your own diary even if you don’t pay – you just will not be able to post new entries or notes.

What about the members that paid for “lifetime memberships” under the old OD?

March 27, 2018

@belledarkheart I’d like to know this too.

March 30, 2018

@belledarkheart @cosmicthecat Lifetime memberships from previous Open Diary will be honored on this site, and should be restored automatically when the member reclaims their diary.

April 2, 2018

Any plans for a neo-lifetime membership option?

April 6, 2018

@lilliputian we are not currently planning on bringing back the Lifetime membership – the annual membership is probably the longest one we will offer for the near future. Thanks!

Why should I trust OD with a subscription when it was shut down, with little warning and with no way to retrieve my entries, previously? This always struck me as a callous disregard for the community and i’m left wondering why I should support OD considering their past behaviour.

April 6, 2018

@ossian we can certainly understand your feelings, but also hope that you will see that the site is being run differently this time around. Ultimately, it is your choice whether you want to subscribe to use the system – but even if you choose not to subscribe, you will continue to have access to your old diary entries.

April 9, 2018

Personally I hate this idea. OpenDiary was (if I remember right)free for everyone in the old days unless you wanted to subscribe. I was really happy that OD came back until I read this. I was really looking forward to posting in my diary on here but now it’s either get forced to pay money for a previously free site (which is why I signed up for it in the first place)or not be able to post at all after a certain amount of time. I’m grateful to have my old entries back but I was looking forward to posting new ones as well.

April 9, 2018

@tams we are sorry that you feel that way, but as we explained above this is the best way for us to keep this site healthy. You will continue to have access to your diary, even if you don’t subscribe – but as you said, you will not be able to add new entries.

April 11, 2018

@opendiaryhelp Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled OD is back. I’m just not jazzed about having to pay for it. I’m definitely happy that I have my old diary back. 🙂

April 11, 2018

Thank You for bringing OD back!!! I see a lot of people are pleased!!!

April 13, 2018

@butterflyrose you’re welcome 🙂

April 17, 2018

Sounds good.

I’m  curious though, why you felt the need to shut down the OD last time?

April 17, 2018

@washington that’s a story the DM may tell in a future entry, we will see.

July 24, 2018

$1.00 a week or less if you pay once a year?  That’s alot less than the cost of  “free” when you factor in all the stuff going on that you don’t even know you agreed to.
