Not Feeling That Draft

I didn’t watch the 2025 iteration of the NFL Draft.  I haven’t watched the draft for many years, which is probably because my team, the Cincinnati Bengals, is already built for success.  I think the last time I cared about the draft was in 2021, when the Bengals drafted WR Ja’Marr Chase out of Louisiana State University in the first round with the fifth overall pick.  Cincinnati just needs to put it all together for once and stop losing their first four or five games to start seasons, only to have to fight tooth and nail during the final eight or nine games of the season.  I’ll take a 9-8 season, but only if it leads to a post-season berth.  Even as I write this, I don’t know who Cincinnati drafted.  Again, this draft wasn’t going to make or break the Bengals this season.  It’s not that I don’t care.  I just didn’t care enough to tune in, nor have I even bothered to research and see what this year’s draft class looks like.  It’s not indifference.  I’m calling it confidence.

Another OD user recently mentioned now former Colorado Buffaloes WR Travis Henry and QB Shedeur Sanders.  I figured I’d chime in on what she said in her entry, rather than note her directly.

Now, normally, I wouldn’t care about either of these players, but being that they played for a school that used to be in same conference as my alma mater, the University of Southern California, I felt compelled to say a little something about these two.  If I can bash a conference “rival”, there’s a good chance that I’ll do it.  Now, for those of you who follow college football (or even if you don’t), you should know that USC has played the University of Colorado in football a total of 13 times since 2000.

As of 2023, USC holds a 13-0 record against the Buffaloes.

So, suffice it to say that if you’re asking me, the Colorado Buffaloes ain’t shit.

Maybe they thought that bringing in Deion Sanders as head coach was going to turn that tide around and maybe it did a little, but not enough for me to change my opinion that Colorado is even remotely a good team.  Yes, Deion would bring his son, Shedeur, as well as Hunter, with him from Jackson State (where Deion had previously coached), but in the end, it didn’t matter much to us Trojans.  Those two, with Deion, couldn’t help lead Colorado to a victory against USC in 2023.

Anyway, Hunter would end up being drafted with the second overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars who would trade up the #2 pick, swapping selections with the lowly Cleveland Browns.  Maybe he’ll be good?  Maybe he’ll be garbage?  I don’t know.  I will say this though.  Jacksonville’s quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, is no Joe Burrow, who is Cincinnati’s starting quarterback.  Yes, I am biased.  Hunter didn’t play at great schools, but I suppose he’s talented enough.  We shall see.

I like that Shedeur was drafted as late as he was.  I never thought that highly of him and apparently, 31 of the 32 teams in the NFL didn’t either.  Of course, blame it on Cleveland, who rolled the dice and drafted him in the fifth round with the 144th selection.  That’s about right.  Cleveland hasn’t drafted and developed a star quarterback in a few decades now and I’m doubting that they do anything with Shedeur on the roster.  I don’t think Shedeur was that stellar during his time at Colorado, so I don’t come close to getting my hopes up as he transitions into the NFL.

I thought that this was going to be a longer entry, but truth be told, neither Hunter nor Shedeur is all that interesting to write about.  There’s nothing really exciting about anything coming out of the University of Colorado.  Not a damn thing.

I tried, but in the end, I give up.
