Very gratifying yesterday to see such a diverse set of new Congresspeople sworn in. There are so many firsts and milestones for the 116th Congress:

  • over 100 women elected
  • Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland are the first Native American women in Congress (Davids is also the first openly LGBT member of Congress from Kansas
  • Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib are the first Muslim women in Congress (a refugee who came to the country two decades ago and a daughter of Palestinian immigrants)
  • Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez is the youngest woman ever elected to Congress at twenty-nine
  • Ayana Pressley and Jahana Hayes are the first black women elected to Congress, from Massachusetts and Connecticut, respectively
  • Also, over in the Senate, Kyrsten Sinema becomes the first openly bisexual Senator and first female Senator from Arizona
  • Veronica Escobar and Sylvia Garcia become the first Latinas elected to Congress from Texas

It makes me so happy to see the government that represents us to actually (finally) start looking more like us. It can never be a bad thing to have our representatives be more diverse and more like the country they serve.

I’m so excited to see this happening.

We here in Canada have the same thing a diverse government, I like that.  Now the only thing to happen is a female president and a female prime minister here in Canada.

It lifts my heart and gives me hope that we actually will have a future.

This Congress gives me hope that I haven’t felt since November 8, 2016. I am a huge fan of AOC. Huge! All of them really, but her in particular.

oh men, i am very impatient of this !

I couldn’t agree more!!!🙌🏻

Two of the new congressladies are from Iowa – Abby Finkenauer, only a few months older than AOC, and Cindy Axne.   Iowa only has four seats in the house so that’s doing pretty good.
