Justin’s Band Debut

Went out to a club Saturday night to see son Justin’s band play. Had a great time. I’m very proud of him. They played last weekend too. That was their very first "gig". The local club, "The Red Parrot" works with the local kids to offer them a chance to play in their club. They give them 50 tickets to sell for $7. He keeps $5 and the band gets $2.  Last week Justin’s band was called at the last minute due to a cancellation. No ticket sales, just show up and play for 30 minutes. They did well but Justin’s guitar was not loud enough (never said that before ) He also made a few mistakes I picked up on but the kids watching were still going crazy.  This week they got on the schedule and sold all 50 of their tickets! The owner said they could play last if they wanted to so they did. It was after midnight when they went on. Late for this old timer but Diane and I were having such a great time we didn’t even notice. This time the band did very well. The place was packed with their "fans". The band has very good stage presence. Some of the earlier groups were more talented musically but they really got the crowd going. Justin did some great guitar solos. Really dynamic. He’s really pretty fast on the guitar.  After they were done the owner got up and told them they could keep going. "Let’s see what you’ve got".  They only knew a couple more songs but didn’t want to admit it. They just played one more and called it a night.

Now they’re schedled for a "battle of the bands" on Feb 12. (I’ll be in China ) If they do well and make the next round it’s on March 12 so I’ll be there.

The joys of parenthood.

I remember when my daughter’s garage band got its first gigs (in cheesy bars). I was there for all of those club dates, to bask in her glow and to be there in case the cops arrived (since she was just 16). Such wonderful evenings!
