1656 New Year New You
Saucy Scale: 10
At some point in late summer, I truly feared that these children would drive me crazy. Mattson is still just a little guy & Gus was just really jealous of the extra portion of Mommy Time that Mattson was receiving. I decided that I needed to put a little bit of space between the 3 of us. So, I signed Gus up for a local Parent’s Day Out (PDO) program.
On Monday mornings I drop him off at a local church. Mattson & I get a few hours alone together. Sometimes we go to Panera for breakfast. Sometimes we run those errands that are just too hard when you’ve got more than one child along for the ride…
**BEGIN RUNNING ERRANDS SIDENOTE**
Before I had a toddler and a baby to contend with, I just had no clue how much more difficult it is to run into a store for "one quick thing". Every single errand means you have to get them out of their carseats and decide if you need a cart, a stroller, or if Gus gets to walk this time. There is no leaving them in a locked car "just a sec" while you run in…not unless you want DCFS on your ass. (Trust me, I know someone this happened to when she ran in to grab her dry cleaning.)
** END RUNNING ERRANDS SIDENOTE**
…and sometimes we just get groceries. OK, most often we go get groceries.
**START GROCERY SHOPPING SIDENOTE**
Because grocery shopping carts were just not designed for a toddler and a baby. Having Gus walking along side would just stretch out each shopping excursion (not to mention my remaining patience) beyond belief. It is pointless to put Gus in the grocery basket, b/c then you can only buy a handful of groceries. Sam’s Club is the only place which has carts big enough for 2 kids in the seat. They do surprisingly well sitting next to eachother, actually. But who wants to go to Sam’s when you need a loaf of bread, a quart of milk and a stick of butter? (ok, if you get that 1970s tv reference, I love you)
**END GROCERY SHOPPING SIDENOTE**
So, today was our first Monday back at PDO after a lengthy break. Gus quizzed me about the contents of his lunchbox in the car onthe way over. I thought that was funny…he’s never done that before. He asked me if there was a bagel. (Apparently my lunches were a bit predictable.) Luckily for him, I tried out something new. Something I NEVER thought would be in my kitchen pantry…
Oh goodness. I’m so ashamed. However, when I checked out his lunchbag after PDO, I was delighted to see that he’d eaten the whole thing.
Anyhoo… so I think PDO is a good thing for all 3 of us. Mattson & I get a little alone time and Gusser gets to stretch his wings for a few hours each week.
Last year TBU and I won a "Biggest Loser" challenge set-up by his college friends. Hands-down, we kicked their fat asses. TBU took the guy division & I took the wives. We chose the Weight Watchers route to do it. And it worked for us to work it together. But babies, death in the family, a laziness has us both sitting at the wrong end of the scale once again.
We decided to get ourselves back to Fat Camp.
Saturday morning started with a Last Hurrah at Panera stuffing our faces silly prior to that first weigh-in. While neither of us was loving that initial weigh-in number, we were both happy to see that we were still a few pounds lighter than when we signed up for that last Biggest Loser Challenge (albeit just barely).
The truth is, that for us, Weight Watchers (aka Fat Camp) works better when we do it together.
So, la-di-da, here we go again.
Thanks to the nice people over at the local YMCA (and the childcare), my ability to take a few classes & get in some exercise just improved dramatically. Tomorrow morning at 9 am…see you there.
Well, speaking of my beloved TBU, he’s just arrived home from work. Bless his heart, he’s just volunteered for diaper duty2. The least I can do is get some dinner on the table for him.
5 Things That Make Me Happy:
- This laptop
- Fat Camp
- YMCA
- My Family
- NOT MAKING NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS!
It was on Sesame Street.

Great, now I have that kids voice stuck in my head repeating his shopping list “an a stick o buttah”. I, sadly, also find myself at the wrong end of the scale after losing 35lbs last year. I started back on the healthy eating train today and continue to see my personal trainer at the gym. Of course, this is easier for me to schedule being that I live alone and have no kids… which is rather lonely, to be honest. Anyway good luck with yours and TBU’s challenge! I’ll try to update on my own progress once I get going!

I’ve been going to get back on the WW train for sometime again. I was doing pretty good on it in July/Aug until I found out I was pregnant again. Then, after the miscarriage in Oct. I’ve just gave myself permission to eat any & all & the scale is showing it! Good luck on it! I’m sure you guys do an awesome job. I wish I could get my hubby to do it with me.

girl, don’t you remember our excursion to the arboretum when Jacob ran up the hill and almost away from me? LOL. It only gets better. 😀 ps – Super Target has carts that you can put a toddler in the front cool part and the younger one in the normal kid seat.

Is there online grocery shopping in your area? Two grocery stores local to me do it and that’s how I get my groceries. If I didn’t have this option I would go insane trying to go shopping with 2 in tow. I remember way back when you used to get groceries delivered (peapod?). Maybe it’s time to see if your local stores offer the service?
