1749 Moving Right Along – Monday morning
Saucy Scale: 9
We had a nice quiet weekend together. Just our little family.
On Saturday we visited 2 "Halloween Stores" and 2 Big Box Stores hoping to locate suitable costumes for the boys. We found an ADORABLE "sock monkey" costume for Mattson, but were DISGUSTED by the $35 pricetag. What a joke!
There wasn’t a single cute costume for Gus to be found. Unless you ask him, b/c he wanted to get the LAMEST Lightning McQueen costume we’d ever seen (not to mention overpriced)! We absolutely said, "NOPE!"
Looks like Uncle Boogie will be getting his way regarding the hobo costumes. For a mere $7 investment per child, we got 2 flannel shirts (that can be worn again later). Everything else needed for the costumes is already in the closet: overalls & bandanas. I need to find some dark make-up to create hobo beards.
Grandpa J & Uncle Boogie took a little roadtrip over the weekend. Uncle arranged for one of his Cukoo Bird friends to stay at the house & care for his dog (Snickers). The downside to asking your certifiably Nut-Nut pals to help, is that, as a crazy person, emergencies come up which lead to them bailing on the job entirely. If she had "just" bailed, I would’ve been fine with taking over the dog care. Only, she called me every few hours in tears about "letting Boogie down". Yeah, I don’t have time for your craziness, I need to go walk the dog.
So, dog duties did interrupt our quiet family time a bit, but what can you do? They keep our Baby everytime we go out of town or have a realtor show our house. We owe them.
Our little Mattson isn’t much of a talker. It’s nothing out of the ordinary or anything to worry about – at this point. Here’s his current vocab, in no particular order (hopefully I didn’t forget anything):
- Daddy
- Mama/Mommy
- Baby
- Up (which means either up or down depending on the situation)
- Ow!
- Uh-Oh
- Yum/Yummy
- Ick/Yucky
- Ay-yi-yi
- WHOA!
- Moo, Neigh, Baa, Roar, etc.
It’s obvious that he understands what we say to him – he follows our commands. He’s just not much of a talker. He’s more of a "grunter & pointer" or a "head nodder" kind of communicator. (Which forces us to ask him open-ended questions instead of yes/no questions.) Oh yeah…and the limited sign language he still employs when we request some manners.
Yesterday he surprised us with a new word: Gussie
It is so sweet!
TBU did me a big favor. He went out to our rented storage unit to look for something.
When we were packing up all our things & sending stuff to storage, things were moving very quickly around here. At the same time, we made several trips to drop off stuff at Goodwill. When I was looking for a very particular article of clothing for Mattson, I was becoming more & more concerned that it might’ve gone to Goodwill on accident. Which would’ve been REALLY bad!
See, the missing article of clothing is a vintage pair of overalls worn by my darling hubby when he was a toddler. I had Gusser’s 18 month portrait taken in these overalls. It is now (past) time for Mattson’s 18 month portrait & these overalls just could not be found in our house anywhere. Which made me very sad (about not getting the matching portait) as well as very worried that I’d accidently donated this family heirloom!
So, crisis averted! I am so relieved! I’ll make the appointment at the portrait studio for next week.
Which gives me a week to keep all his scrapes & scabs treated and covered – in hopes of healing his poor knuckles, forehead, etc. Yeah, he took a few spills recently, which have taken a toll on his precious skin.
I’m on a mission. We need to empty the large freezer out in the garage. I definitely want to get it completely defrosted before the garage gets too cold. I want it defrosted & cleaned out so that we can start filling it up before these babies arrive in the Spring.
When winter arrives, my belly is huge, and I’m depleted of anything remotely resembling energy…I guess I’ll spend my days cooking & filling the freezer. Anybody have any recipes, that work well with freezing, that you care to share?
Otherwise I’m gonna have to go to the recipe section of The Duggar Family website! 🙂 (You know I love me some Duggary-Goodness on TLC!)
Speaking of my expanding belly…
I only had 2 pairs of pre-preggo pants that were fitting (sort of). Well, I had to face the facts that I was looking more than a little bit pathetic walking around with my top button un-buttoned all the time. I wasn’t fooling anyone.
I bought a couple pairs of pant – too big in the waist right now, but that won’t be the case very long. A classic black turtleneck sweater. A dressy dress. Some blousey-type blouses and a few other things.
I bought more than I’ll need, so a few returns are in order.
The weather is turning dreary this afternoon. I’d hoped to make a run out to the outlet mall with the boys. I don’t feel like getting caught in the rain, though. Also, I’ve somehow injured my foot again – same foot, different kind of pain. It would be slooooow going across the mall in the rain! It might be prudent to wait a few days.
Oh jeesh…
My big boy is compliaing about an upset tummy. I better go investigate the situation.
Sorry, no time for my list of 5 Things That Make Me Happy at the moment. Gotta run!
Re: hobo beards. I once needed a beard to be one of the three wise men in our church’s Christmas play, and I think my mom took a flame (match or lighter) to one end of a wine cork. Let the burned end cool, then you can use it to mark your kiddos’ faces. Voila! Beard, and cheaper than buying makeup! I couldn’t tell you about messiness/smearing/it getting on stuff because that was a long time ago, but Google might have some answers. 🙂

I don’t know if you have any in your area but my wife has found great and cheap costumes at a kids only consignment shop. For the most part they are worn once and then sold for a fraction of the cost.

I love your ‘compilation’ entries where you give a little time to talk about everything. I feel so caught up!

I take “UP” to mean – get me out of whatever current physical state I am currently in.

I peaked at the Duggar website- and I can tell you that the Tater Tot Casserole is DE-LISH!! Of course I halve the recipe (other wise I would be eating it for a month!) sock monkey- super cute! Lightening McQueen- Super Lame! And I bet is was super over priced too. But then it has to be difficult to make yourself look like a car without one of those contraptions. They will be adorable as hobo’s.

My kids were all late talkers. I have a theory that they are either early talkers or very physical. (Just my own theory). I found with the second one all they had to do was point and grunt and the older child would say it, get it or give it to them. My 3rd child didn’t really “talk” until he was two because he had the other two to rely on. As far as recipes, soups, stews, lasagne, all freeze well. I love the recipes on thepioneerwoman.com. You might check her out. Now I’m going to check out the Duggars website. I love their show along with Jon & Kate.

Check out savingdinner.com for freezer meals. She charges, but it’s not much and she takes any guesswork out of the equation. She’s also got low cost recipes on there.
