translation project
Today was just a regular day at university. At 12.45 we had arranged to meet at the 8th to discuss our translation project. With the five of us we have to translate two Dutch brochures into English (about acne and about getting a job as a driver). I had proposed that everyone send their comments to me (for acne) and Tom (for driving) and that we would come up with a version based on those notes. In this we it’ll be ensured that the brochure is written in the same writing style. As there were no other proposals mine was accepted almost without emendation. This meeting was pleasantly chaotic, when everyone was arguing and trying to persuade others that their word/structure was the best. Luckily we had the opportunity to form our own group, and everyone in this group can be completely trusted to do their work.
At 13.30 we were kinda done, which we had to be because our oral presentation class had nearly started. Next week I will have to give a presentation, but today I only had to comment, in writing, upon others. The topics chosen for the presentations vary enormously. This is because this course is taken by students of English literature, English linguistics, and Communications. The topics today were:
Uncle Tom’s Cabin (which I’ve never read)
The Great Gatsby (which I have read)
Violence on television
The correlation between the tone of newspaper articles and corporate image
Problems relating to the introduction of a corporate language
I like the girl who did the presentation on The Great Gatsby, unfortunately she did not do a really good job. Our teacher is going to wait till she’s seen all the presentations before marking though, which means that I don’t know if it was still good enough to pass.
After this class I walked with Fransy to the exit. We chatted a bit about our teacher training and stuff. We weren’t in a hurry because we were outside and the weather is great. It’s really warm for the time of year (too warm???).
Then back to university to write assignments.
Hi, thanks for your note.. I haven’t read The Great Gatsby in a while.. But just wanted to write back! Have a great day!
