6 May 2007
(spoiler Pan’s Labyrinth)
I have this tradition of writing in my diary on the 6th of May. I have done so for the past 8(?) years. Why this date you ask? I’ll explain that in a later entry.
Today I awoke at 7.55. The neighbours were playing music. However, this was fine since I slept well and had to get up anyway. My radio alarm went off at 8.41, and listening to ‘Good morning Sunday’ I remained in bed till 9.15. I had had all kinds of weird dreams with hidden passages and pursuits. I don’t know what it all meant, but I really enjoyed them. At 9.40 I went downstairs for breakfast (2 boiled eggs on bread and 1 banana). While boiling the egg I read a story from ‘Tales of the Slayer 3’, viz. ‘Dark of the Moon’. At 10.20 I went upstairs again to finish my breakfast (one slice of bread with pate, one with hazelnut spread).
10.41 I went and brushed my teeth.
10.46 I prepared my lunch
10.56 I read ‘Dark of the Moon’ to a finish. The slayer in this story dies.
11.31 I read aloud ‘The Book of Fours’ (again a Buffy the Vampire Slayer book). I read aloud to practice my English pronunciation.
12.00 I went out to watch a movie.
In the tram to the city centre I began the next story in the Tales. Then I bought a ticket for the movie and had lunch on the Leidsplein (2 slices w/ cheese). The movie started at 13.30. ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’. A girl with a fascist stepfather has to undergo three tasks in order to prove that she is a fairy princess and to take hold of her kingdom. This fairy tale isn’t for children. It has violence and torture, murder and death. At the end of the movie the girl has to hand over her newly born brother to the Faun. She refuses, and in this way she passes the final test. She has saved her brother from the evil stepfather, and in doing so she loses her own live. Not many movies end like this. She gets ruthlessly shot down.
I loved the movie; it’s no wonder that it received so many awards. The serious and violent tone of the movie is set when the stepfather murders two men who were suspected of being rebels. He does this without looking for evidence, and when he does search through the men’s bags he finds evidence that they were just hunting rabbits, but this is after he had killed them.
15.53 I walked to the American Book Centre and there I browsed the shelves till 17.40. If I could I would buy every book there. In the end I bought ‘The freedom writers’ diary’.
18.15 Making diner and eating it up.
19.38 I went upstairs to my room again.
19.53 Aloud reading of ‘The book of fours’. I finished it, about 400 pages. I don’t know how long it took me to read the entire novel aloud, but it’s done! Now I have to find another novel.
20.09 Reading in ’Tales of the Slayer’.
21.35 Preparing lunch for tomorrow.
21.51 shaving
And after that writing in my (paper) diary.
