Freedom Writers
Because of Whit Monday I had an extra day on which I couldn’t work properly on my thesis. The VU (university) was closed and I need a computer with SPSS and Wordsmith to analyse the data. Now I did do some editing, but editing not more than 10 pages doesn’t take a lot of time. I also concluded reading the Freedom Writers’ Diary. This is an amazing book about a high school class that reads Anne Frank’s Diary, Zlata Filipovic’s diary and that kind of books. They learn about tolerance and draw parallels with their own lives. They have a teacher who inspires them and organises field trips and everything. This book’s really something which applies to me. I love diaries, and I’m even writing my thesis about it. And, I often donate money to the Anne Frank Foundation. And I want to become a teacher of English. Maybe I could incorporate some of this teacher’s methods in my own lesson plans.
This book’s really cathartic and is definitely something you need to read on your own.
After finishing this book I wanted to read some more. Unfortunately nothing new was waiting for me, so I just watched some television and DVD (Buffy: Fool for Love). Today I went to the library to borrow some books which may be fun. These books may also be on the reading list for next year (but, alas, that may change if the teachers feel like it).
Adrian Mole: the wilderness years (Sue Townsend)
In the Skin of a Lion (Michael Ondaantje)
Surfacing (Margaret Atwood)
The Stone Diaries (Carol Shields)
I’ll start with the last one.
