Ethics and Journalism (short answers)

1. Define (or describe) ethics.

Most societies have standards for what is considered ethical, or "the right thing to do".  Western societies ethics are based in large part on the Bible’s Ten Commandments.  Ethics are rules for the civil conduct of a society’s members and possible outcomes for incivil behavior.  It is important to note that doing the right thing matters whether or not anyone is paying attention.

Ethics are often conditional, unfortunately.   Many times, the right thing to do depends on the situation at hand and/or who’s involved.  There are times when the right thing is the wrong thing, but this is a very subjective call and may well be deemed wrong by later observers.  Unethical behavior, even if unnoted by anyone else, still has to be lived with by the person who commits them.

2. Define (or describe) journalism.

Journalism attempts to convey the who, what, where, why, when, what for, and how of events or places.  Journalism is the original tele (far) vision (sight).  The journalists tell what they see to those who aren’t there.  Ideally, the journalist is only commenting on what they see, without giving a subjective interpretation of what they see and what it means.

However, the nature of language and the many different words available to describe an event or person can lead the writer to be unintentionally subjective in the reporting of said event or person.  Intentionally portaying an event or person is widely known as slanting the news, and while the writer may be "straight", the editor may demand changes or may re-write an article to slant it in ways the publication (or media) desires; to influence the way it’s seen by the consumers of the journalist’s output.

There are many kinds of journalism, which is a broad term that covers many forms of reporting and investigation.  All have their own idiosycracies.  Television reporting is fundamnetally different from print reporting, in that it is much more visually oriented than print media is.  Now, in the 21st century, we have a confluence of these two types of media, and as high-speed internet connectivity becomes more prevalent, this confluence has generated a new form of journalism that is more visual while retaining much of the depth that the printed word can convey.  The journalist can describe what they see, and also present pictures of what is there too.

Some journalism is specifically orientented towards conveying a viewpoint of interpretation. The Opinion/Editorial pages of a newspaper, for example, specifically gives interpretations of events to their readers, and, in effect, tells them what to think about what they are reporting.

3. Explain what is ethical journalism?

Ethical journalism tells who, what, why, where, when, and how, and leaves the interpretation to the reader/consumer.

4. Name an ethical journalist.

This is actually a difficult question – I read a lot of Opinion and Commentary peices, which by their nature are slanted and tell the reader what the writer thinks at least, if not how the readers should see the subjects.  The paper I deliver has it’s own Opinion writers, which I sometimes agree with and sometimes don’t.  Does that make them ethical sometimes and not at others?  A fair answer is "no", it doesn’t.  It is a matter of opinion, and one may be right and the other wrong or vice versa.

The ethical journalist  presents a viewpoint, based on their interpretation of events seen or places visited; one that is not slanted in such a way as to unduly influence the consumer of the journlist’s output.

Since these questions were relayed by a writer here who is taking a class on Journalism and Ethics, undoubtably much more can be said of each of these subjects.  these are thus short answers to complex questions.

In this diary, I attempt to be as ethical as I can, but it is a very subjective medium, and is personal to me.  In the strictest interpretation of what is written above, I am not the most ethical journalist, since I often use the words I write to influence and shape opinions as best I can.  What readers see in what I write is of course ultimately decided by how they themselves are influenced by the way I write something, and ocaissionally, that interpretation is not the one I meant to convey.  This is part of the nature of human interaction, and not to be regreted too much.  After all, if all my readers thought the same way I do, what would be the point of writing something everyone knows already?

I especially like your summing up of your own writing. And yes, hindsight (and foresight!) is a wonderful thing.

Well done my friend a good piece of writing to be sure. We can and do all paint wonderful pictures with words but obviously many persons will read into it what they perceive. HUGS and HUGSxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Okay, I had eight of good snoozing, so I am back! This entry does you proud I think. It makes you think. I believe that to be an ethicalwwriter, one who can be revered, you need to be someone who tells the truth, and only the truth. In the Ten Commandment law it is written ‘You shall not bare false witness about your neighbour.” God sees our neighbour as being every one around us…

wether we know them or not. I have been the sibjest of someone’s gossiping lies before and it really hurts. I think to stay ethical writers should be like slooths, sniffing out the true circumstances and only telling the actual events as they have occured, or are fortold to occur.

(Of course they should never get int dangerous situations that may cause them to lose their lives–just so they can expose something important to the public.) One thing that I don’t like about reporters are the made up stories that are obviously not true at all.Film stars have so much written about them that is most likely a figment of someone’s imagination.I think that is very sad.

I thinkit must be very heart breaking to have all those lies made up about them. After all they are people with feeling just like us.(I gues these stories are mostly in magazines though.) If you are doing a course on journalism, I hope you will remain ethical and will only ever write the truth. After all your reputation is something that follows you ever afterwards..

If you have a good one, your name will be held up in high esteem. But if you get a bad reputation for being a lier, someone who only writes lies, then your job prospects will go down the drain..and that would be even sadder!! I think you are an ethical person who only writes the truth though. So you shouldn’t have any thing to worry about!!

Oh, ps, I read your last entry with the snake picture. You know N>W>Cat if you ever feel your concience pricking over things you have done in the past, you can always put your hands together and say sorry to God for the things you feel were a bad choice back then. That is why Jesus came to die on the cross for us. He came to recieve all the punishment we really deserved.

Because Jesus did this for you Cat, you can receive forgiveness now. There are some lovely scriptures that say this in the bible. If you don’t mind I’ll write some for you.(just let me know if you do mind.) “My eyes are ever on the Lord, for only He releases my feet from the snare.”Psalm 25:15. (the sanre being the punishment for sins.)”Blesses is he whose trangressions are forgiven,…

..whose sins are covered.Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not count against him, and in whose spirit there is no deceit……For day and night you hand was heavy upon me, my strentgh was sapped as in the heat of summer. Then I acknowedged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity.I said (to myself), “I will confess my transgression to the Lord”,—

–and you (oh Lord,) forgave my sin. There fore let everyone who is godly pray to you (Oh Lord)while you may be found…… Many are the woes of the wicked, but the Lords unfailing love surrounds the man who trusts in him….. (Now) you can rejoice in the Lords and be glad, you righteous, (you) can sing all you who are upright in heart!!Psalm 32 This said with a big smile Cat because..

there is hope for all of us sinners. If you want forgiveness, all you need to do is say sorry. it is that simple. Just talk to god about what you feel guilty about and he will cover it over as though it never existed. He promises to still love you and will still take you to heaven when Jesus returns. For ..”the word of the Lord is right and true,he is faithful in all he does.”..

The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love…Psalm 33:5. Ihope you will now use this opportunity to allow yourself the great privilage of being forgive for your transgressions. I can testify that once you do, you will feel such a wonderful feeling of peace in your heart. You will feel just how much God loves you personally.

He certianly thinks you are worth the time and effort and sacrifice! After all Jesus came down here to die in your place too.Even if you were the only one on this earth who ha ddone somthing wrong, and deserved punishment of that wrong act,He would have asked his father if he cold receive you punishment for you.And father God would have looked at you with such love and compassion that he would ..

have said yes!!! Well Jesus and Father God do see you down here. They do know you. They have been listening to your prayers and answering them. They do love you very, very much, and Father God has already allowed Jesus to be punished in your place.Although it happened a long time ago, it still stands as being worthy enough to cover your sins for you.

Father God and Jesus are waiting, hoping you will believe this. I hope you make them happy and do believe it….They love you very muchh Cat.They have compassion on you.Their eyes are full of love for you–not hate as some may say. They have done everything in their power to SEE THAT YOU ARE SAVED FROM PUNISHMENT> because they want you to be saved!!!They want you to be in the crowd that Jesus

take home to heaven when he comes again! They want you to live with them in heaven–to be there to feel their love for you, to feel that you belong and you have a family that will live with you for all eternity. They want you to feel that you are one of the family of heaven.A son of Father God, who once was a sinner, but who has now been redeemed from among men.

Cat, this is one of God’s promises for you. ” I will be a Father to you, and you will be my son(s)….says the Lord Almighty.”2 Corinthians 6:18. “for God did not appoint us to suffer wrath, but to receive salvation through Jesus Christ. He died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep (in death) we may live together with him (when he returns..) 1st Thessalonians 5:9,10.

When Jesus was here on earth he explained to the people that he had to return to heaven. He said our Father’s house has many mansions and he was going to prepare a place for us to live in.Cat I believe jesus is also preparing a place for you. he wants you in his kingdom. They love you dearly and miss you if you wern’t there.

I am glad I am not the one to have had to answer these questions. My brains (what little I have and I am not even blonde!) would have been fried by the end of it. Good values you set forth in your answers.

I wouldn’t consider this a journal and just write what I am thinking. I rarely write about things I know because I am fearful of being attacked for my beliefs. I guess I am a coward. I couldn’t sway anyone to believe in God or other moral issues. So I remain silent and mostly pray about it.

well thought out answers in this one. i can see you put a lot of careful thought into this. and as far as your last rhetorical question, i agree completely. i appreciate the different points of view.
