The Columbia River Highway

Last Thursday, I went to the Gorge to see the icy waterfalls.  They were featured on the nightly news the night before, thus there were as many people out at Multnomah Falls as I see during the summer months.  Multnomah Falls is pretty spectacular when it freezes up, but the old highway, which runs by the various water falls in the Gorge looked ice free, so I ran up the freeway to the next exit and got off to run the old highway back to Portland.

For decades, until the interstate was built, this two lane highway was the main road east and west in the Gorge.

From here, the road goes on to Crown Point.

The news reports the night before made it sound like the river itself was frozen over; these reports were greatly exaggerated.

Last Thursday, I ran the Gorge in reverse; Crown Point is usually my second stop; the first one is usually at Chanticler Point, at Women’s Forum overlook (which will be the last photos of this series).

Hard to imagine these were taken on a day that was so cold.
