a short visit
My friend has been riding motorcycles for several decades, and is an experienced rider, but the other day, sand on the road got into his front brake and it locked up, tossing my friend faster than he could think or act. He has a broken nose, a fractured skull, nine broken ribs, and misc. other injuries. He’s in a great deal of pain, but is coming in and out of consciousness, they have him so loaded up. He’s going to be in the hospital for awhile, it looks like. He’s like me and doesn’t have any family nearby; his are all in Massachutes and Vermont, and I guess I’m one of his closest friends. His lady friend and I will work out taking care of his dog, and him too, I guess and I’ll keep the ex informed..
OHSU is a MAZE, and would be without my less than sharp memory but it was the best excuse to ask pretty nurses questions and directions. (yeah, there’s dog in my background, I guess) The VA hospital is up on "Pill Hill" too; several people asked if I was a veteran and thanked me for my service. That never used to happen, but in the last couple of days, it’s gotten me thank yous and a nice hug, and some appreciation, even if it was 29 years ago when I got out of the Navy. It’s kinda nice, and if it gets me more hugs, well….I could stand it.
In short, my friend is badly damaged but will live and recover, in time, and I’ll do what I can to help him.

BTW I told him that many had written to say they were thinking of him and praying for him, and he got all misty-eyed and said to thank you all, as do I – thanks for thinking of my friend.

But he does have family nearby, Cat. He has you. 🙂 Wow, that’s a helluva lot of injuries he’s got there, and it’s going to take him a lot of time to recover. Who better than you knows how that goes, eh? I’m sure all of us who have read your entries for any amount of time are wishing him all the best. I’ll be sending good thoughts towards Portland every day–for both of you. 🙂

sounds like he has almost the same kind of brain injury as you so you know how to help and what is needed

I’m glad you told us how the accident happened. Motorcycles scare me. I know they are a lot of fun but if anything goes wrong there is no protection. Again – reading backwards – I’m glad you will be able to help him.
