Meatloaf

"Whatcha makin’?" my son asks as he hungrily looks over my shoulder as I was preparing dinner.

"Meatloaf." I answer as I smile to myself knowing full well what reaction that will bring.

"Oh." he says disappointedly as he walks away.

Yup, that was the reaction! lol. As always, I am reminded of a time when Steven and Stephanie were young teenagers and we had been a ‘blended family’ for close to two years. Everyone was seated at the table and Dennis and I got their plates ready and placed them in front of the kids. As I put Stephanie’s in front of her, I noticed a look of alarm flash across her face. I was confused and even more so as I turned back to the stove and heard her whisper "Are we in trouble?! What did we do?!"

She obviously wasn’t talking to me, but I had to butt in here. I asked her what she was talking about and after squirming in her chair a bit, she said I only serve meatloaf when I am mad at them!!

"No I don’t! Dad and I like meatloaf!"

"Yes, you do! And NO one likes meatloaf!" she says with conviction.

At this point, Dennis and I can’t help but laugh and both disagree with her again. The other 2 kids tell her to shut up before she gets them in trouble and I point out that she only has a little bit of meatloaf and it’s smothered in gravy anyway. I also point out that it’s just a big burger sliced up but noooooo, it’s gross!

This incident still makes me grin to this day because I am always absolutely amazed that this child could equate one single meal with being in trouble because these kids were always, and I do mean always in trouble! Let’s not forget that we really were literally on the school’s speed dial that Steven and Stephanie attended! LOL!

So I have a new recipe for meatloaf now that we love which calls for apples! I can only imagine what Stephanie would have made of that back then. She probably wouldn’t have been able to keep herself from running out of the house screaming!

I like the meatloaf that I make (just like my Mom’s and my Grandma’s!), but I would never order it in a restaurant. Apples – I’ll have to try that.

I ~*LOVE*~ meatloaf! Newby and I try to have at least once every week. I use the WW recipe. 🙂

The meatloaf with apples does sound good. I have a daughter who isn’t a hamburger fan….but the rest of my family loves meatloaf-especially with mashed potatoes!

Ok, ok, I guess some people do like meatloaf. Weirdos. ;P

Meatloaf goes over well in this household. I just don’t make it very often. Nobody ever asks for it though, come to think of it.

I’m with FireFaerie, I don’t particularly like meatloaf. It’s funny our friends P & J requested meatloaf for one of our Friday dinners. I found a recipe w/ sundried tomatoes and pine nuts. I went gourmet w/ meatloaf, if one can do such a thing. I also used turkey burger in an attempt to make it healthier. It wasn’t bad…but still a loaf of meat…hmm, yeah, there’s just something about it.
