Bomb in Bali

I just got emails from Elaine and Sinead…….from Thailand. They weren’t due to go to Bali until tomorrow, which is a relief. But they still intend to go, which is……I know it’s probably the safest place to be now that it will be crawling with Australian troops, forensic teams and air force planes but still. what a horrible thing to happen; it really seems to have gone off within a huge crowd, with maximum destruction intended. And I’ve no doubt it was Al Qaeda or some of their allies; Bali is the one place in the world’s largest Muslim country where you’ll find the most civilian westerners. It’s been described as Australia’s Ibiza or Hawaii. Which makes you think.

I was trawling through a load of Australian news sites, trying to figure out what were the chances of any Irish people being caught up in it. So far, there seems to be two Irish injured but it took me quite a while to find that out. I was very mixed-up all day becasue I wasn’t sure whether to ring the Department of Foreign Affairs and waste their time with an enquiry about people who may or may not be in Bali. So I decided to wait til the 9pm news on RTE and if there were any more Irish involved, I’d ring. But then I got the emails just now.

Elaine is coming home after Bali. She just found out her Dad is sick. I think Sinead and Sarah are going on to Australia. Elaine’s Dad didn’t want her knowing; it’s serious. So maybe all’s not that well. Still, she’s coming home to be there for whatever happens.

Thing is… people do tend to be a bit quick to point fingers at Al Queda. I’m a little sceptical to be honest… I dunno, it just doesn’t seem that clear.

Whoever they were, they’re not nice people. To kill tourists, who have nothing to do with whatever fighting is going on, that’s just low.

Brian Cowen advised Irish citizens to steer clear of Bali. People just have no respect for Brian Cowen these days!

I’m glad your friends weren’t there. French Oil tanker exploding off Yemen, attacks on US forces in Kuwait, now this. And people think thats theres no bother from terrorists. Oddness. kev
