Christmas in Dublin

I’m working today, Christmas Day, from 9.30am to 6pm. I didn’t have to, but the prospect of 41 cents a minute to just sit there and take thirty calls an hour (instead of the usual 80-something) was too much. It’s very slow, though, and it’s taking ages to pass. A bit like Christmas dinner, which should go ahead at 6.30pm or so.

Tomorrow I’m working 9am to 5pm and then I’m off until New Year’s Day, when I’m working 5pm to 9pm and 2 January, when I’m working 8-something to 4-something. The next day Catherine will come…..I mean arrive in Dublin and she’ll spend a few days at my house (meeting OD folk along with some of my “homies”) before we head off on the 7th to Galway for three days in a hotel. After that, we’ll go to Cork and spend a nice, final weekend to top off ten wonderful days.

So basically the thought of that is keeping me going. There’s not much else to recommend about working Christmas Day, bar the fun of driving into work, blaring out “There’s No Other Way” by Blur, through empty roads leading into an empty city. It reminded me of the start of Abre Los Ojos (the original Vanilla Sky) where the guy runs through a huge empty street in Madrid. Funny enough, I got the DVD of Abre Los Ojos for Christmas, along with /Minority Report, A.I. and The Office. Add to that a bottle of Mania by Armani (not sure myself but it smells nice and the bottle’s cool so that’ll do!) and Homer Simpson socks and I’m dead chuffed, thank you very much!

If Dublin was a person, it wouold be sprawled out on a couch right now, bloated and about to fart. It’s a day for relaxing. And I don’t think I’ll be doing this again.

Still, as my mother says “it’s an experience”……

Did you get that DVD? Interesting… I got an unusually impressive haul considering i’ve already been given my gift in the form of tickets to Amsterdam. The christmas spirit is obviously alive and well in my house. So much so that i’m using the internet on christmas day. Kill me now.

RYN: My one remaining hope was that you were the sickly, weedy type and that Catherine had been attracted to you on compassionate grounds. Obviously not. But I am the kind of person who never gives up hope. I have booked four two-hour sessions per week at the local gym and, starting tomorrow, I am going to run (slowly) 100 yards per day. In 15 years time I reckon I should be a match for you.

After all, I’ll only be 74 going on 75. Surely you wouldn’t hit a man that age, would you? P.S. I wear glasses. P.P.S. My glass is empty again. Sorry, I have to go. <{:0)

P.P.P.S. Just before I go here’s a little snippet of information for you. You can pass it on, if you wish. I got Homer Simpson socks, too. From my eldest daighter. They are inscribed with the timeless Homeric lines, ‘No. 1 DAD’. I will wear them with pride wherever I go. I hope I can count on you to do the same. <{:0)
