Driving through a blizzard!
Ugh I’m nervous! If I had to guess I’d say that we got 7 or so inches of snow last night. This afternon it’s supposed to start again- on the news they’re saying that we’ll get another 1-3 inches today. After midnight they’re saying to expect another 6-8 inches of snow.
My sisters and I are still in Minneapolis. We’re leaving for home, a 5 hours drive northwest, at around 2:30 or 3 today. I suspect that it’s going to take us a whooole lot longer than 5 hours to make the drive today- if we’re even able to make it at all. It’s not looking really good. And I’m going to be the one in charge of driving us the whole way.
It really would have been nice to leave for home yesterday before all of the snow hit, but we were forced to wait because my little sister, Ali, was scheduled to work today. Apparently every last person that she works with was scheduled to work today in either the morning or evening (she works at Whole Foods, an organic foods grocery store) so there was no way that she could get it off. On top of that she’s a new employee.
Our plan is to just drive as slow as we need to to get there in one piece and to keep our gas tank full. We’re going to drive Ali’s car because she has a four wheel drive SUV. We have AAA in the event that we need to get towed or need rescuing and we’ll be loading the vehicle up with blankets just in case we end up stranded. We have extra money in case we hit roads, winds, or blowing snow that is so bad that we need a hotel room.
We’ll survive and we’ll make it home eventually- it’ll take a lot more than a blizzard and a foot of snow to keep me from going home for Christmas- but that doesn’t mean that I’m not going to have cramped hands and white knuckles by the time that we get there.
I just hope that Ali’s tires are in okay shape!
Dave got new snow tires put on his car last night. He and I went to the Wild game and then out for sushi and drove right through the worst of it (the interstate was so bad that you couldn’t see the lines of the road through the snow on the ground) without any issues. I really wish that I had snow tires on my car!
Anyway, wish us luck! Happy holidays, everybody! 🙂
Wow! Sounds like you have quite a drive ahead of you. Just take it slow! I hope you all arrive safely.
