Love Always Gets In The Way
Why don’t we say what we want to say?
It seems like love always gets in the way
Tripping our tongues like limbs in a three legged race
But sometimes spoken words are unnecessary
When it’s written all over your face.
How do we expect this to ever work
When hard labour and toil we gladly shirk?
If we aren’t prepared to put our backs in to it
Should we really be shocked at the effrontery
Of love having us licked?
Will we forever be defeated by this obstacle?
Get treated for our injuries at the local hospital
For the assault and battering we’ve taken
I thought love was the obstacle but maybe it’s indifference
I apologise for being so badly mistaken
We shoot our mouths off at each other
It’d be hard for sociologists to categorise us as lovers
Two barely functioning human beings
Short circuits cause the only sparks between us now
That we’ve become oblivious to each others feelings
The rhymes sometimes feel a bit forced, but I like this. The first couple of lines remind me of a song but I can’t put my finger on which song. It might be one I invented in my mind. That first stanza could be something out of a balld-turned-dance-song. The second is more poetic and written-wordy… The third reminds me of a kind of dark, black, violent, comic, optimistic sort of poetry, like Matt Skiba’s lyrics. The last stanza is more emo. It’s like a blend of different things.
