slant-eyed gooks on WRCZ Albany
Gentlemen,
By now, I’m sure I don’t need to explain the hijinks outlined here
http://www.asianmediawatch.net/945fm/
or my disdain for them.
But what you might want to see is this excerpt from a message board post at
http://forums.yellowworld.org/archive/index.php/t-24949.html
by one Ms. Fang; she has listed the contact info for sponsors of Mr. "Pi" and Mr. Gach’s show to encourage boycotts. She alleges that Mr. Levine sent her the following email:
Dear Ms.Fang,
You are attempting to interfere in the business of Galaxy Communications. If any such incident occurs again,I will seek any and all remedies afforded to me by the law.
Ed Levine
CEO
Galaxy Communications
Why would Galaxy Communications threaten a measly letter-writer exercising the very-legal act of consumer choice? You seem to support free speech. Don’t you support a free market? Consumers are free to boycott your broadcasts and your sponsors, form and propagate a negative opinion of you (free speech…), and inform your sponsors that their products are associated with a company that many perceive to be racist (there goes that free speech again).
This alleged threat, along with the publication of e_lee8015’s email on Mr. Gach’s website (http://www.jrgach.com/2005/07/letter.html), seems to suggest that you yourselves found the broadcasts and your handling of them somehow out of line, and you’d prefer to avoid the issue by writing off your less-than-articulate objectors. Now, I’m not saying the DJs owe anyone an insincere apology. I’m sure they thought they were being "satirical" or "counter cultural." But I always understood the target audience for classic rock to be made of white folks over 30. Albany County was 81% white in 2000. I find it extremely difficult to believe that your DJs truly thought they were introducing their listeners to a new, ironic way of thinking about reality. I also find it incredible that "God-fearing rednecks" is a term that the average white would find so deeply offensive that it balances out the definitely-offensive-to-most-Asians "slant-eyed gooks." Equal opportunity ribbing it ain’t.
Maybe you’ve experienced that persecuted feeling yourselves before and simply don’t share my opinion. Perhaps, given the 1st amendment and your target market, any discussion of race is irrelevant. But we’re allowed our opinions, too. And there is no excuse for threatening Ms. Fang and other would be boycotters with what I can guess to be only a fleet of lawyers. You can threaten us all you like. As a "slant-eyed gook" myself, in spite of my deep "rikee" for "crassic lock," I still won’t be listening to WRCZ 94.5 FM the next time I have to drive through Albany County. I already wasn’t buying anything from your sponsors, but I sure don’t see a reason to now.
Sincerely,
[Chonk]
Pass it on, baby!

1. What famous historical figure/celebrity are you most proud to share your birth date with (date, not necessarily same year)? (Use this site if you donÂ’t know any: http://www.scopesys.com/anyday/ ) 2. It has been said that people chose pets that resemble them. WhatÂ’s your favorite animal and do you think it resembles you, physically or in personality?

3. What was the strangest childhood ambition you had? 4. “IÂ’ve got a number of irrational fears / that IÂ’d like to share with you…” and they are? 5. Meatloaf says he would do anything for love, but he won’t do THAT. What is “THAT” for you? And as a bonus, if you have any thoughts on what Meatloaf himself meant, I’d love to know. Enjoy! 😀
