Tested

Leaves trembling on the branch
shaking, uncertain in the light of a
higher sun.
The landscape barren, cold
neglected.

I’ve been brushed by the cold wind
that sweeps across flat surfaces
raising goose bumps and
making me numb in the waiting.

Never have I stared down the barrel of
a future this way –
Defiant and heretical,
refusing to bow to the whim of another.

Naked and intense
standing proud in the light of a
setting joy.
The apocalypse must be faced head-on
before the dawn of the ever-after.

I’m ready for the storm.
I’m standing here, steadfast
resolute and confident that
although my determination may be tested
it will never be broken.
