I had a job interview today… **
… for an actual real, live hospital job!
I need this job I need this job I need this job I neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed this jooooooooooooooooooooooooooooob I need this job I need this job I need this job I need this job I need this job I need this job I need this job I need this job I need this job I need this job I need this job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111111111111111111111111one
It’s no big deal or anything. Except it’s a HUGE DEAL because it’s the job that I neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed for field-related experience for my major. NEEEED. I need field-related experience to be considered for an internship. PLUS I found out that instead of working for something like $10/hour I would be making $14/hour. Forty percent more than I expected! I could quit my serving job! It’d be a foot in the door! Fairview, the hospital that I interviewed at, is ONE of only THREE HOSPITALS IN MINNESOTA (one of which is at The Mayo Clinic in Rochester- I don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of getting that one so let’s pretend like it’s not there) that offers the dietetic internship that I need to become a Registered Dietitian (RD). Last year between all of the dietetic students that graduated from The University of Minnesota and St Kate’s (my school) only TWO recieved local internships. TWO.
I NEED THIS JOB.
I think that the interview went well. I owned it. In my mind, I was already given the job. I spoke when spoken to and I answered my questions well, I was witty and funny and smiley. Goddammit.
She said that she’ll be making a decision within the week. If I make it to interview #2 I will be recieving a phone call, if I don’t then I will be recieving a letter. Oh lord, please let me get that phone call. This is perfect. I deserve this, dammit.
Keep your fingers, toes, eyes, arms, legs, hairs, lips, and whatever else crossed for me. Thank you in advance.
**Edit: I need to elaborate on my previous post, I think.
I mentioned before that there are only three hospitals in Minnesota that offer accredited dietetic internships. Those hospitals are Mayo, Fairview, and the VA Hospital here in Minneapolis. Each of these hospitals take on around six dietetic students after they’ve completed their bachelor’s degree, and the hospitals get to choose any student from any national college that has an accredited dietetic programs. This means that the internships are very competitive- only the best students who show the most leadership (through both volunteer work and paid positions) land internships. Only after the internship is completed can the dietetic students take their final exam and become Registered Dietitians. If a dietetic student does not receive an internship or go on to a graduate program that includes the internship in with the graduate program, then the student is not technically a ‘nutritionist’ or RD. This greatly reduces the number of jobs that one can find in the field, and GREATLY reduced the amount of pay that one can recieve for a job. Forget working in a hospital (which is what I want to do).
The job that I interviewed for today is what this particular hospital calls a ‘dietary clerk’ (on other hospital websites I’ve seen this position also called ‘nutrition aide’, ‘dietary technician’). The job basically centers around office-type work. Patients staying in the hospital order food from the cafe. It would be my job to review their menu options to make sure that their food options are okay based on their medical history (eg a renal patient would require a low sodium, low protein diet). I’d be working alongside Registered Dietitians and other dietetic students, so it’d also be a great chance for me to network.
I hope that this helped clear some things up! 🙂
I’ll be thinking of you – that’s amazing! Good for you girl.

Good luck! I would pretend the Mayo doesn’t exist either.. because who would want to live in /commute to Rochester anyway? What is the third hospital? St. Cloud?
