The Geriatric Kitty*

Oh, I love American Idol. And my ears have finally, finally unplugged- I can hear! Life is good today.

My mom, aunt Regina, and cousins Landon and Christopher are all in town for the next couple of days. The high school hockey team from my hometown made it to the state tournament which begins in St. Paul tonight- so they all came down to watch it. I was going to join this evening but I’m broke- I failed to stick to my budget last week and I’m paying for it big time right now. Like, big time. It was worth it, though- it was my friend Chloe’s 26th birthday and Chloe, Brittany, and I (all celebrating our golden birthdays [26!!!] this year) have been looking forward to this year for a long, long time.

Anyway, I’m going to hang with them tomorrow. I’m also going to try to use a day of PTO on Friday so that I can hang with them all day on that day as well.

I’m baking bread again. It smells incredible. When I initially put the bread into the oven I was thinking grilled cheese and tomato soup for dinner but it’s nearing 7:30 and the bread is still in the oven- I clearly didn’t plan this very well. Oh well. I’m not really all that hungry anyway. If nothing else, it’ll cool overnight so that I can throw together a sandwich for lunch tomorrow.

I have nothing to say. I wish that I had something of substance to say- I feel like it’s been so long since I’ve written anything with any kind of meaning.

Oh- I think that my cat has diabetes. Type 2, of course. He’s nearing 16. A couple of weeks ago I was reading about cats as they age and according the websites that I was sifting through, at this age he’s officially considered geriatric. He’s not grossly overweight (11.6lbs as of 6:00 this evening), but that doesn’t mean much at this point. He’s old. His pancreas is doing old-people things.

I haven’t brought him in to the veterinarian yet- this is all self diagnosis. He seems to be displaying some of the symptoms that I was displaying when I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes- he seems to be going through a lot more water than normal and he seems to be peeing more often. He hasn’t recently lost any weight, but I wasn’t actively weighing him and keeping track until only recently. Of course, if he’s Type 2 then he’s still taking in a decent amount of energy and probably wouldn’t lose weight at the same rate that I did as a Type 1 (with Type 1 your body effectively stops taking in carbohydrate which is a fairly large chunk of the average persons daily calorie intake).

I’ll probably bring him in sometime next week after I get paid. I hope that I’m wrong. I don’t want him to have to suffer through daily injections- he’s a helpless little animal who won’t understand why I’m inflicting pain on him. I mean yes, the needles have come a long, long way and they are nearly painless to me- but I imagine it’s different when you’re a cat and don’t have a lot of soft areas to take the injections. Injections into muscle hurt far, far, far worse than injections into fat.

I’m getting ahead of myself.

Homemade ‘light’ whole wheat. I used a mix of white and whole wheat flours to give it a lighter texture (I feel that homemade 100% whole wheat kind of sucks as sandwich bread- it’s too dense!), and to keep intact some of that healthfulness and nutty goodness that only whole wheat bread can offer.

Yum.
