Marengo Cave (pics heavy)

Sunday Echo and I went down to Indiana to go cave exploring. Marengo Cave was the one I picked because we could easily make it a day trip. The trip was worth the 3 hour drive without air conditioning. The cave stays a consistent 52 degrees year round. Forget the pool lets hang in the cave!

This area was called Mirror Lake. The water was so still and reflected so well that is appeared the cave stretched very far down. In reality the water was only about 3-6 inches deep.

This formation kind of looks like an erupting volcano.

An actual waterfall inside the cave!

So many different types of formations. Random lady from the tour group.

Would be cool to camp down in the cave. Some boy and girl scout troops even got that chance.

Bacon anyone?

I see so many things in the snapshot. What do you see? Faces?

It baffles me how they formed with this kind of a pattern.

Is this a gateway to another time?

Two little kids (a boy and a girl) discovered this cave. They only had candles to guide them. Can you imagine all the things they would have bumped into if their candles went out and they had to feel their way back up? Oh, and they didn’t tell anyone where they had gone.

Have to be careful in caves not to do any damage. I don’t know if these broke on their own or were the unfortunate victims of a human accident.

This one is called The Great Wall of China. The gentleman leading the tour said it also resembled t

he Grand Canyon when the water dries out.

Closer view.

Wedding cake anyone?

When the cave was first discovered they did not have flashlights and had to go much slower with candles or lanterns. As a result people became thirsty along the way and this is where they stopped to get some water that flowed. The current owners tried to remove one of the cups but it was so brittle it just fell apart. They decided to leave the others as part of the cave. They also do not recommend drinking cave water…unless you want to be in the bathroom for three days.

I see a ship wreck. What do you see?

They say it is safer to be in a cave than in a house during an earthquake. The cave is much stronger than the beams in a house and most people never even feel the earthquake while in a cave.

Random people from the tour squeezing through formations.

This is Penny Ceiling. You can throw change up and try to get it stuck to the ceiling. After a couple of years the owners collect the change and donate it a charity. Very cool of them I think. I couldn’t get my penny to stick but left it there anyway.

Sometimes they turn the lights out and the only light you see is the trail out or no light at all. Beware if you go, they may tell you…you could see your fingers if you put your thumb on your nose and wiggle your fingers in front of your face. Then they will turn the lights on to catch you looking silly. 🙂

Some see and eagle and a buffalo here.

The little black spot in the middle is a real bat. Was a surprise to see them because bats typically prefer more dry caves. Was not the only bat we saw that day. I accidentally deleted the closer shot of another one before I could upload it.

An elephant, ice cream, Pirates of the Caribbean character, I personally see a mummy.

This one baffles even the scientists. They don

‘t know how or why it grew in this fashion. Intriguing…

Another shot of Mirror Lake. Can you see the fake depth?

Me tying on a cool hat in the gift shop. There was a T-shirt I liked but it cost $18. Too much for a t-shirt if you ask me. It read: "Use a compass. It is awkward to eat your friends". They also had some shirts that said: "Cave Naked. Hang out where the sun don’t shine".

Giant chimes outside the cave gift shop.

Coming back, part of Cincinnati. Echo was going crazy with the picture taking. However there were a few I liked.

A view nearing downtown Cincinnati from Kentucky.

Okay, so you guys seem interested in what I said to the question Echo asked me. Well I told him the truth. I told him if he asked me now I would say no. I don’t know what will happen in the future so I couldn’t say what my answer would be then.

I see a snake, a statue and a dancing woman statue. 🙂 Lots of dentures in the next one. One of them looks like it’s from Lord of the Rings, 3 one down from the dentures. That wedding cake to you looked like the mountain the Grinch That stole Christmas lived on. 🙂 I love the pictures, they are great! Thanks for all the time you take posting these 😉

Oh, the timing of my walk was stupid, I should have swam first and then walked as I used swimming time, not really sinking in the pool wasn’t open that much longer. I do like to walk or other first before swim. sometimes the swim times dictate what I do first..
