Mothertríocha

So I’m 30 now. It’s been a lot less traumatic than I expected it to be. I’ve been grey-haired for a while now, I’ve hated standing in crowded pubs since forever and I outgrew nightclubs after college. I like city breaks, boxsets and writing letters to newspapers. I’ve been in a 30-something mindset for many years.

It feels like my age has finally caught up with my brain. And I know that sounds like a sad thing but it’s liberating not to have to feel like you should be “out there”. Travelling the world, snorting drugs off a cistern, catching STDs from ladies – none of these things ever appealed to me. I like waking in my own bed, living in my own country and coming home to the same woman every day.

Drugs never appealed to me. Maybe they would if I got bored of alcohol but I haven’t yet. To this day, I’m happy getting buzzy, merry, sozzled and shitfaced – in that order. I just have to avoid the next stage, which has many names in this country: fuckfaced and cunted being just two gems.

I had my 30th birthday the other day, which I marked with a few drinks in my favourite pub in Dublin. It sounds simple but I’ve never done it before. I’ve never had any kind of public event marking my birthday since I was around 12. I’ve had dinners, weekend breaks – even a night at the theatre to see Ralph Fiennes tell an audience member – while in character – to “turn off the fucking phone” (my 21st). But never anything with invites and a specific date and time, which constitutes a party in my eyes.

I only had one because I felt I should mark the occasion by turning 30 in the company of the people who’ve been friends without my ever acknowledging it. I know it sounds weird but I haven’t ever been part of a group of friends on my own. I’ve been on the periphery or something like it. And yet last Friday, a bunch of people decided to come to this lovely pub and wish me happy birthday. Over 20 anyway, possibly 30 – huge numbers to me. And just the idea of that is kinda nice.

So I should probably try and live my 30s like this. Not be too afraid or shy to say “y’know what, I’m having a party – and I’m the reason for it”. I had 14 pints of Smithwicks and a Jack Daniels, some platters of food for everyone, caught up with a ton of people, discovered unknown links between cousins and survived to tell the tale. I’m so glad I did it.

Yay for being thirty! Glad you enjoyed it. I think it was my best birthday yet, I tend to avoid marking the occasion and never did the whole official party malarchy before really. It seems a 30th is the new 21st. I am almost your complete opposite though. I love waking up somewhere else other than here, and am dying to go travelling EVERYWHERE…but I do like having the one man in my bed 🙂

ryn: thanks for the suggestions. Arrested Development is brill alright, I loved it, apart from the last season which was such a disappointment. Didn’t really take to 30 rock but will give it another try if you reckon it’s worth it.

ryn You make it sound like the president is thinking of converting to homosexuality.

ryn: oh yeah, they’re seriously well worth checking out! The outlet part of it is great if you ever feel the need to get something a bit extra special, or if you’re addicted to pricey labels. I got my laser eye surgery sun glasses there, some swanky make with every sort of UVB etc protection for a measley €20. Sign up for their newsletter, they send out codes for 20% off regularly enough.

Thanks. Hate feeling like this and the weather isn’t helping. Supposed to be an electric storm today/tomorrow (wed) anyway so it’s getting worse. Hate having to prove my worth. So, belated birthday and thank you again. Twi

RYN: She’s vastly overrated. Cute as a button, granted, but she’s a sycophant for today’s nerd generation; a walking, talking, cosplaying ruse.
