US’s “New Draft”
For some very odd reason the HR 163 bill has been around for over a year and today was the FIRST time I’ve heard of it.
Let me get it out in the open, I am 100% AGAINST this bill. Before you read my rant please go to http://thomas.loc.gov/ and do a search on HR 163 bill and read it.
This is a different type of draft, actually its not a draft at all but a bill that would require every American citizen between the ages of 18-26 (including women) to serve the government. Per current Military rules to enlist, if you meet those that’s where you go first, if you do not you go into a civilian service job for Homeland security.
Im against this FORCE of servitude. I think serving the US should be voluntary. I’ve actually posted my opinion in several ways on an email list I belong to and its been a great conversation, but I still stick to my guns and say no. Im against this, this would take my boyfriend away from me if it gets passed in spring of 2005. He would not be 27 until april of 2007 and I dont want to see him have to go off to war or away from me. I dont think I could manage the bills while he was gone, nor the loneliness. There is a reason I did not end up with a military man like my mother has. I see how often my step dad must leave her alone, and I saw how much my dad moved when I was little.
So I went and I called my local news channel to find out why there has not been information on this bill on the news (stupid news going very right wing instead of being liberal). Then I made sure to call my House Rep, and my Congressmen (mine are currently both men).
So after reading the bill, if you are inclined to call or write here are the locations to do so.

House Representative (you’ll need to ask if they are your local Rep or not, if you dont know which one covers your city): http://www.house.gov/house/MemberWWW_by_State.html
Thanks for your note, but you’re way off base. You can read more about my neighbor in my latest entry.

On the bright side sweetie, many bills are introduced and fail. One similar to this one has failed several times. Yes, though, I agree with you, service should be voluntary. Take care…

Sorry, I thought you would have read the entry already. It was online overnight and most of the morning yesterday before deleting it. Seeing through your eyes, the “rotten apple” entry was probably mean-spirited, but honestly, it wasn’t like that at all. I’ve known this neighbor for over 15 years and he’s a member of my husband’s carpool.(con’d)

Our entire community is subject to HOA’s rules and regulations, and in our county, backyard clutter is illegal because of any lingering chemicals that might exist in those discarded appliances. If the neighbor had asked us for help, we would have been more than happy to do so, but as it is, he’s more than able to take care of his household issues on his own, financially and otherwise. Why he’s not taking care of them, it’s not our business…it’s between him and HOA. As for the blue tarp, it’s gone…he told HOA that he only hung it up to dry and then forgot all about it for weeks. As for your comment about raising our fence, we can’t anyway. Seven feet is the highest allowed in our county…(cont’d)

it has to be low enough for firefighters and ambulance workers to be able to jump over in case of emergencies. My “rotten apple” entry was supposed to be humorous and tongue-in-cheek, and I’m sorry you were offended by it. We became homeowners 20 years ago and we do remember our rough and challenging beginnings. Good luck with your new house.

That sucks. I have no interest in going into any branch of the Armed Forces and if that stupid bill gets passed, that’s exactly what I’ll have to do, since I’m 26. I don’t want to have to leave my husband and children to fight in some war at any time.
