Well fuck.
Does anyone here know the smell of childbirth? How about death?
And how about both at the same time?
Last night, Penny was having her calf. The calf was huge. Me and Billy must have pulled on it for a good two hours before we got it out. Dead. And when I say pull…I mean, we were in full-on tug of war mode. If that rope would have broken, we would have fell back a million miles – that’s how hard we were pulling. The calf’s head kept on tucking itself to its right side. It wouldn’t come out straight, so me and Billy took turns adjusting it’s head and trying to pull it out, so everything was lined up right. We finally got its head out…but it wasn’t breathing. All we wanted now was to get that calf out of Penny, for her.
We finally got the rest of it out. A pretty little heifer calf. Tried to save it. Me and Billy picked her up by her back legs, to try to shake the fluid out of her lungs. Then we set her down, and did CPR. But it was done. She wasn’t wakin’ up.
I thought I was going to be sick. Not from the blood or shit all over me. But from sheer physical exhaustion. I’m still tired from it. The smell is still kind of stuck in my nose too.
Anyway, it sucked.
I went to work, and had a really great day tutoring people. Got home, and picked up a new calf from a dairy farm for Penny to take as her own. Me and Billy cut the skin off of her old calf, and tied it around the new one – so that she thinks its hers (otherwise she wouldn’t take it). I think Penny is gonna take it. She’s got a lot of milk for this baby. So hopefully it’ll work out, and Penny will learn how to be a good Momma.
I’m leavin’ to go to Harrisonburg soon tonight. I’m gonna see Rachel, and we’re gonna party. We’ll probably make a pot-roast tomorrow too. I’m pretty excited for that. 🙂
ahh that sounds stressful
